Here you have it. Finally got Gus finished up and ready to hit the road. It's my $100 paint job. Used the rustoleum on the poptop turned out awesome. Just use a foam roller and make sure you have no ants runnin around. They nearly ruined the top. But I think it turned out great!! Love it. The Old!!!!!!

Thanks for posting this, it is encouraging. I'm on a starving man's budget and need to redo the paint before rust gets worse. Every time I try to decide what method to use, I run across the purists with their convincing arguments for automotive paint, convincing arguments for a high end sprayer system, and so on until I'm convinced I can't afford to paint my bus and put it off some more.

It's nice to see someone who just did it and didn't burst into flame. Twisted Evil

I did all the prep on my 72, let Maaco spray it for $300 6 years ago, got lots of oohs and ahs since then, now it's time for a redo, just don't have the shop any more for prep Crying or Very sad

Nice sportsmobile, looking good. mine is primed and ready for paint at the moment. I used epoxy boat paint and a little roller on the pop top, came out great as well. Nice job.

I'm in the middle of a 2-tone rustoleum job on my vanagon. I am a total fan of the roller method. I read the world-famous 100+ page $50 paint job thread over on the mopar forum and I am sold on it. I can see the purists point of view, but if you're a poor college kid and your bus isn't a top notch collector's item, I think there's nothing wrong with busting out a quart of tractor enamel, going to town and really making your bus your own. It's like a really big art project. that you drive. Laughing

Ya dont forget to use a foam roller on the top Because I got the fuzzies too. But all in all it took 2 weekends just for primer and paint. There is alot of stuff to tape and retape. And we always ran out of paint. I'd say there was 20hrs involved in the taping and painting. But that did the bumpers, wheels, pop-top, and 2 tone. The top half is just primered and sanded the bottom is primered and painted. Now I'm wondering about clearcoat? To do or not to do??

Ohh man that really looks nice!! I'm on the fence when it comes to painting it with Rustoleum or saving the $$$ and sending it to a shop. I'm leaning towards the rattle can for now just to cover up the nasty PO bondo job Evil or Very Mad

and then saving the money and doing it right some day!!

Its o.k to leave it in this forum. I really think it worked out great. Im going with the budget theme when it comes to body/paint. I really want to get Gus road worthy.So the $100 paint job was just to make it a little easier on the eyes while she sits.

I have a qustion for those of you who've painted a bay this way. How much paint does it take to do the original two-color scheme with a roller? Do you settle for the colors they sell or try to mix yourself? I haven't been able to find anyone who'll mix rustoleum.

I only did the pop-top with the roller. The body took prob. 10 cans of paint. Spray Cans!!

I just got an estimate for body work and new paint from a professional, who I am convinced would do an excellent job: $5600+ Ouch!

So, now I am rethinking this. There's this good Krylon color in their Industrial/Farm Implement line that is a good match for MarinoGelb: School Bus Yellow. It fades to a bit of a peachy color after a couple of years, but I just can't justify the professional paint job. I am leaning towards the Krylon, but OTOH, I hate to do all the time-consuming and labor-intensive prep and body work just to rattle can it.
