I got some decent sized gobs of Permatex High Tack on my heater boxes and a little on the heads a while back trying to stop some weaping from pushrod tube seals (Scat tubes).

I didn't think much of it at the time because it usually stays pretty sticky and acetone generally cleans it off. I figured I could come back later and clean it up, but it's been there long enough and hot enough to bake rock hard. Acetone won't touch it.

Anyone know what'll soften it now? The heater boxes are powder coated and seem to be impervious to most solvents.

Mineral spirits worked on some baked on Permatex.
I soaked a shop rag and layed on the baked on brown stuff. Let it sit for a bit and check to see if it softens the sealer.

Ive never ued that stuff on vw motors... especialy tube seals. my scat seals never leeked. there are some tips to install them so they dont leek. 1 oil the orings, 2 oil the seats on the heads&block. 3 use led flashlight to look from behind to be sure the seal has sealed. it needs to slip into place in it's seat. if you install them dry they have traction like a tire, and may not seat where they need to, leaving a gap witch will leek and the seal will be stuck there and not slide even with that leek. it's not the seals or the tubes it's the installer.

I tried dry, I tried oil, I had them apart a bunch of times. As a quick fix I tried Permatex, but it didn't work either.

They only leak(ed) at the seals to the heads.

With the engine on the bench; I could see that the sockets in the head aren't smooth. Whatever they were cut with left quite pronounced concentric grooves and sharp edges. They were new heads that I fitted as part of the rebuild a couple of years ago.

The sockets in the case are smooth, and they haven't leaked. The head side didn't leak with the old heads, so I figure the problem is the sockets in these heads.

I've done my best to smooth the sockets with some wet and dry while the engine is on the bench, but I'm still putting the new seals in with Permatex to be on the safe side.

Permatex is alcohol based, maybe try soaking it with that?

Note to self: Always clean up spilled paint or sealers quickly before they have a chance to dry.

At this point it’s just something that adds character, don’t let it bother you.

I had a guy bring back a chevy 350 because it had a CRACK in the side.

Luckily it was just a FINE string of permatex 300, which wiped away with brake-clean and a rag.

Since then I wipe away any excess.

True. Laughing Probably could have saved a bit by not getting the boxes powdercoated. It's harder than that.

Looks like it's staying put. At least it's not conspicuous.

Thanks all.

uppon installing you 1 must be smarter than what your working on as always, 2 move the tube around wiggeling it till it is seated good BEFORE FINISHING TIGHTENING THE HEADS OR RELEASING ALL THE SPRING PRESSURE ON THE TUBES. you can also use the silycone seals, they do last much longer. I usualy make larger seal back up washers and swedge them to the tubes so they donut come off or get lost. VSI shims work for this. I donut remember the #I use .030 or .060, cant remember that either... I have installed tubes and seen light comming through and repositioned the tubes, never had any leeks.
