I need to be doing what ScottDoonan is doing (great work btw) but the Ghia is running too good and my local windy roads are too beckoning for that just yet.
Changed the oil & filter, put 20 psi in the fronts and 28 in the rears and took it out for a nice spirited run, it didn't disappoint

Looked at it through the house window due to 95-degree heat.
But I have started work on installing Porsche Cayenne wheels onto Ghia.

I had to address my rear wheel bearing issues because it's the start of parade season! I had been reading up on the topic because the Bentley manual is strangely vague. Turns out it was easier than I expected, and about ten times messier than expected! The outer bearings were original and went dry, despite there being enough grease in there to fill a distributor cap. I did the work with the diagonal are on the car, and the inner bearing was still good. I debated with myself as to whether or not to replace the inner, and I concluded that an original bearing in good shape was better than a new Chinese bearing. So, I cleaned the old inner and repacked it with modern grease. The new bearing made a big difference in freeway driving, and I could take my hands off the steering wheel for a quarter mile while towing a trailer at 70 mph. Steady as a rock. I also used the trailer that I'd just lowered, and the handling was indeed great. Gas mileage for the 400 mile trip was 25.26 mpg, but I gave no thought to economy and did lots of overtaking.
Dry bearing!
Setup area for parade. In the trailer are 3 speaker cabinets, rack with mixer and outboard equipment, three heavy amplifiers, a socket set, power tools, and my big toolbox. Other amps and speakers were in the car.
Short clip on the back roads (click to play video). Car was quieter with the glass pack muffler than expected...

Bought 4 tires online and had them put on the turbine wheels that came with this 1970 Ghia coupe. What a PIA to install the front tires, took me at least 1.5 hours longer then it should have. Going to change out the hub to studs rather then these bolt/nuts .. |

Put the Mattingly Bros. Refurbished gauges into the 66 Coupe this weekend along with a custom made Tach. Couldn't find the 66 dash trim pieces at a good price so we put black python snakeskin wrap over the dash front. Gives it some attitude.
This is a father/son project for my 14 yr old. _________________ '66 Beetle

Did the yearly Ghia detailing. It's a bit more involved than my normal spraying "Speed Shine" and calling it good. This was to prepare for my Dad visit from Florida. This year I took him to Vintage Gran-Prix of Mid-Ohio at the Mid -Ohio Sports Car Course. This was a belated Fathers Day event for us.
We went Sunday and participated in the car show and also got to take a spin around the 2.2 mile course. I wish we could have stayed all day but it was threatening storms and although rain isn't a big deal hail and potentially damaging winds are a concern.
So this (from the left) is Dad, a good friend Chuck and Me. What bellies No wonder the Ghia is getting smaller!
Here Dad and I are waiting in the Ghia fot the track to open up for us. Sorry about the glare.
More of the same just a bit wider shot.
A set of pictures. We are entering "Thunder Valley" I'm amazed at Chuck's skill with the camera. Those were hard shots to get since Dad and I were "at speed"

Tried to replace a head in the engine, while it was still in the car. After removing some of the engine tin, the heater box, and the muffler, we decided it couldn't get done that way. Ordered a transmission jack from Harbor Freight to help me lower the engine.

That was the debate here for the past few days. My buddy who has been a "gear head" since we were little.... said go with the trans lift because it had a higher and lower lifting ability. Only reason I bought it. We'll make some kind of mini platform to hold the engine on the transmission lift. |

I "prep" the engine for removal then with the car sitting on the tires put the MC jack under the engine and pull it from the trans. Jack the car up with the engine on the MC jack, drop the jack and roll the engine out from under it. EASY PEASIE _________________ Chuck in Socal
