Had a Scat Drag fast ... too tight
Had a stock lever with a quick shift kit ... ok but too loose
Installed bargain EMPI ... just right so far
Wanted Talbot look mirrors but don't have $385 each ... so installed these from CIP ($30 each) ... Note; these from inside the door so you have to be willing to do some major hacking to mount them. The telltale holes from the old mirrors will get erased after I'm sure these are my "final choice" mirrors
While I had the door apart to mount mirrors I installed new door straps ... WoW ... no more door falling shut and knocking my drink out of my hand ... doors stay open when they are supposed to. Would have been easier to do with hinge of the door, but can be done with the door on the car.

Traveling across town to a show my idiot light came on. Pulled over hoping a belt snapped. I carry a spare. I don't carry a spare alternator!
I was past the point of no return so I continued to the event. Once their I found it very, very hot and smelly (burning windings ) I luckily I had enough battery charge to get home. This week I'm replacing my beautiful two year old with about 1500 miles on it CHROME alternator. I have confirmed (more than once!) "Chrome won't get you home". Fortunately my battery did.
Here's some pics of what I'm doing.
I hope I get it back together for Volkfest http://www.covvc.org/volksfest.htm
A proper Bosch AL82N Alt. is on it's way. Should be here Wednesday. I hope

A nice new Bosch arrived as I had hoped on Weds.
The install was straight forward and was able to make Volksfest 24.
When the old alternator gave out the idiot light steadily grew brighter until it blinked out. No big deal right? WRONG !!
I have a plastic KGPR wire cover in the trunk. It's truly a PITA to remove it to access the back of the dash. I figured I would just get a volt gauge to tell me the state of my charging system (or maybe that's an amp gauge?) Anyhow, I was doing some research and came across something I had been totally ignorant of. The "Idiot" light is essential to the charging system. I came across this bit of info quoting samba member Dale M
"If alternator is putting out 14.2 volts and any time it is most likely good...
The ALT lamp functions by having a positive voltage (12 volts) on one side coming from ignition switch (same source as coil wire). When alternator is not spinning, it puts a ground (earth) out on D+ terminal... With key on and motor not running the ground (earth) from alternator causes the lamp to light.... When you start up engine and alternator spins up, it produces 12 volts out on D+ terminal, the transition from ground (earth) to 12 volts on D+ terminal cause a condition where the voltage is equal on both sides of the lamp so it goes out (equal voltage on both side of lamp equals a no current flow situation through lamp filament) ...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Alternator also need a quick pulse of 12 volts to initialize it to start generation electricity on start up so the idiot lamp actually functions for three purposes...
Initialize alternator..
ALT charge indicator..
FAN belt lost (thrown) indicator...
http://www.mydune-buggy.com/dl_files/AlternatorBasics.pdf
Also you have to excuse us people over here in "new world" we "ground" things we do not "earth" them....
"
I never knew this. I was saved from trashing my brand new Bosch alternator.
I tore apart the old chrome job Looks like the diode pack died. Why it did I haven't a clue. Here's some pictures of my Autopsy. Maybe someone can tell what happened

Here's another nugget of info, I have the same chinese alternator fitted to my bus, it seemed ok for about a year but then the light started to stay on (not charging) when the engine was started.n Through some trial and error I discovered that the output from the dash light wasn't enough to initialize the alternator. I tried different 'fixes' such as different bulbs and the like but the only thing I've found that works is hooking up an independent wire from the battery to the same terminal on the the alternator that the light goes to. It has a push switch inline that just needs a prod to give it a 12v blast and the light goes out and the alt starts charging. I'm not inclined to fork out £££ for a new bosch alt while this keeps working!

And then I broke it!
But then:
Found the short! Yay! In the process of getting to the bolt behind the fan shroud I moved the wire dropping down to the starter to the front of the fan shroud (the hot coming from the coil) As luck would happen it was spliced at some point and at the splice there was maybe 1/16th inch of exposed wire WHICH happened to line up EXACTLY at my center heim joint for my carb linkage. They made good friends. I could not cut a wire to that precision of length
Anyway fixed that up and she wanted to GO!.... and did! |

Installed a Mini Cam Sync from The Dub Shop. The LS2 truck coils are now running full sequential.
Also repaired a $25 tachometer. Now I need to figure out where to mount it.
I also need to get the final parts done to mount the throttle bodies. You can also see what I made to make the 48mm throttle bodies easier to work with on the 1600 while the 2333 type 4 sleeps.

I know it only small things and none of it stands out but their shinny new bits and they put a smile on my face.
Added new Negative battery cable, door guides
I also reworked my washer pump and got my clock to work by replacing the internal workings with modern electrics and just put the original face and bevel on, as PO had obvious tried to resolder the fuse and damaged the clock in the process. Cost of replacement clock £40.
The car is no longer frozen in time at 11.54am/pm. |

I umm, checked the oil. Then I drove it in the annual Crusin' Hines event. Despite there being what seemed like a thousand very cool cars, the Ghia had lots of stares and finger pointing. There were a few bugs, four or five dune buggies, and a bay bus, but no other Ghia's

The seats that were in my '71 convertible when I bought it were pretty worn and had been recovered in vinyl that was starting to look dingy. Plus, somewhere along the line they had lost their headrests to gain that lowback look.
I decided to replace the seats, front and rear, with some that I had salvaged from a prior project car. They were in relatively good shape, but the front seats had some grey overspray on them from another project (a Captain Kirk chair I built for a friend). After looking at reupholstering options, and reading what others here had done, I opted to try the SEM Classic Coat vinyl paint. I'm pleased with the result so far. We'll see how they wear...
