Did some work on the ghia this weekend as the weather is warming up.
The wipers didn't have much oomph, so I stripped the mechanism, cleaned and re-greased it. Works like a dream now.
Also set about restoring the horn wiring to stock, but discovered I have a leaking fuel tank as well, looked inside and I can see rust, so I'm thinking the best course of action is just to replace it. |

Few days off to work on the little things that I have collected and wanted to change, was not until today that I realised how long the list was hope to finish tomorrow
Fix Boot release
Change engine air hose
Add chrome to licence plate light holder
straighten and fix the above
Add front speaker
Add Karmann Ghia Script to Dash
Change Dash Pad
Add Chrome to Rain Gutter
Add gasket to steering column at firewall
rubber tube to Air three way junction under dash
and rubber around courtesy light switch
before picture
After
9 out of 11 complete
Glad I had two simple jobs as Dash pad and air hose were a pain
Still some work on the pad needed a bit wavy
forgot how hard it is to do this job probably why I left 18 months between doing drivers side and passenger side

Completed all the jobs I set myself this week
Chrome to rear licence plate I have put vinyl over it as paint is poor and dont plan a respray soon. Looks fine from a distance
Before chrome to gutter
After not overly impressed with it just barely long enough to cover predrilled holes in gutter and the rear window end sticks out and all attempts to bend it makes it worse. left chrome undrlled as I am sure trying to drill will damage it.
Script to complete dash
Plugged firewall so hopefully less draft and noise.
Unfortunately damaged wiring when doing steering boot so ended up stranded on test drive luckly was able to limp home |

Great photos as usual!!
Hope those horses stay off of the road!
Did you plan the "Dr. Who" phone booth with a newer VW in the background? |

Thanks...I'm afraid the horses don't stay off the roads and often fall foul of speeding, mostly local drivers who should know better. The speed limit is 40mph on all the open Forest roads.
The telephone box was just a handily placed prop and begged a picture.
When I got the club meet, my friend Jon was already there in his '52 Porsche 356 Convertibe...same colour as his '52 356 Coupe.

I bought my '71 coupe a couple weeks ago and have been getting to know her gradually. Yesterday I jumped in a got up close and personal, changing the oil and transaxle fluid. I've done that on other vehicles, but this was a first on a VW. Shifting seemed to be happier and the engine quieter on the drive afterwards. Now I have a oil drain plug plate and some other goodies on the way to make the next time a little smoother!
Next, the carb... |

Transported my '63 to body shop: Some paint fixes and dent removals and generic care taking for the paint as the car is painted last time in 1992 and it has been on the road quite a lot: It shows.
Also new old engine (carburetor) adjustments, steering axle rubber joint and some other small fixes are in the program.
The goal is to have it inspected and road legal in early May.
Here's an older picture, it's moving to meet the engine:

Got spark plugs and cables in. Sounds easy but wasn't to me. Found #1 and #2 completely stripped out from PO cross-threading some POS tractor plugs in. Never had to rethread and install timeserts before, but once I got the correct tap (first one sold to me was for helicoils), got the holes threaded and inserts installed. 3 days of waiting for the high-temp loctite to fully "bond" and she started right up. This was the last step (and I thought would have been the easiest) in a complete ignition overhaul. Started right up and ran nicely.
Not only were the old junk plugs cross-threaded, but they were all gapped differently, with the largest being largest being over 1.06mm. Ugh. |

I've been reading a lot of stuff on this forum, and since I'm going to be spending time with my VW, I might as well post a bit, as I continue to lurk.
I finally got around to starting my end of the resto on my father's Ghia. I guess it's mine now (inherited), but I don't feel like I've put enough into it to call it mine as of yet.
As of yesterday:
More or less looks good, runs well, had to get it road ready again:
Inflate tires
Charge battery
Replaced a headlamp (and fuses)
Ended up spending most of my time trying to get the horn to work, sanding relay connections, testing grounds and juice, only to find it disconnected under the steering column.
Wiped down the mouldy interior (was in a garage for over a year)
Bought cheap-o seat covers to hide the grossness until I can replace the seats.
I ordered a headliner kit from Jbugs, rubber for all windows except the doors.
I'm not really sure if I want to keep the chrome(ish) details on the window rubber or not, but I figure it's in there, might as well... if I don't like the look I can just plasti-dip it later .
What I'm working with:

I picked up my trans last weekend. Rhino case, Super Diff, welded 3rd & 4th, Erco bus nose cone, Erco HD side cover, late model throw out shaft, '66 axles, Empi seemless axle boots, and powder coated axle tubes and backing plates.

Here in North most boats are on the shore all winter and mold is a serious problem, so all boat shops have good remedies against mold.
Better option as new seat covers and if the old ones really are too worn, don't throw them away until you've new ones installed. Interior pieces aren't easy to get right.

Chrome trim fits into window seal so if you bought original seal it won't work without trim (leaks) and 'California look' -seals don't have groove for trim.
Plasti-dip or black electric tape (not cheap one) is a handy way to hide the chrome trim if necessary.
But a nice looking Ghia you got, congratulations. _________________ Kharon -- '62 typ1, '63 typ14, '61 typ21, '65 typ34, '74 412, '75 typ26

Put alittle charge on the battery, checked the oil (engine & air cleaner), added alittle air to the tires, did a quick preflight then took it out for a long overdue spin. A good whindy spin over Joppa Mtn and back.
Everytime I take it out I say I'm going to start on the bodywork but by the time I pull it back in the shop, I decide I just don't won't to take it off line just yet

Beat on the bent passenger door for a few days. Didn't come out to bad, then today I put it back on the car! _________________ Chuck in Socal

So I've been fighting with my old carb for a couple of weeks trying to eliminate some of the demons it has been exhibiting. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new carb and am now wondering why I waited so long? The old girl is running beautifully and now just need a wash and wax before the Abbotsford show and swap this weekend! |
