Thanks Brassneck - it's a free speedometer app that reads in mph, kph or knots. I haven't bothered to buy the ad-free version because the ads are small and run across the bottom of the screen.
I hooked it in the speaker hole with a short bungie cord. Before the speedo cable snapped I was using the phone app to verify the analog speedometer and they agreed pretty closely up to 60 mph. |

Broken valve spring fixed, alternator conversion complete so first drive out this year in the glorious French countryside, 100 k covered with no issues so now hoping to make the most of the good weather and use the car as it deserves to be used.... _________________ 1960 RHD Karmann Ghia |

Finally got around to installing the Hurst shifter I got from one of the swaps.... replacing the EMPI trigger shifter. Got the "sweet spot" location after several trial and error adjustments. Nice! I've forgotten how smooth this shifter is. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

Finally had time to do an oil change and drain/clean the air filter. I was amazed at the little dirt particles the oil bath filter catches. |

|
|
Just before I left on my roadtrip to WY, I noticed some oil dripping from the oil plate nuts, so I started to snug them up. One twisted clean off. I think the problem was that I had put on a replacement plate, from Brazil, I think, that was thinner than the original. Anyway, a didn't have time to fix it then, so I drive 1,000 miles with a missing nut on the oil plate, and a slight drip. Last weekend I tackled it with some reverse drill bits and Easy-Outs. First, I tried vise grips on the stub of the stud. It just turned to mush and refused to turn. Then I took an angle grinder to the stud to make a flat surface, center punched it, and started drilling, one size at a time, four sizes, smallest to largest. Finally I put in an Easy-Out and it started to turn! Home free! Not so fast, it just kept turning forever. So, I got the next larger drill bit. Once I got it in there pretty good I cocked it sideways to bind in the hole and was able to pull out the stud. It had no signs of thread left on it. I tried tapping the hole with an M6 like original, but a replacement stud was a really loose fit. Ended up drilling and tapping for M8 and putting in a nice repair stud that is M8 on one end and M6 on the other. Worked great, and I think it is stronger than before. No change at all to the externals. |

Hadn't taken the Ghia out for a couple weeks and finally decided to run some errands and take a little cruise in it.
1st problem I run into was the battery wouldn't crank it over. A quick charge took care of that but even though it would crank and crank it wouldn't start.
Subsequent troubleshooting lead me to a bad fuel sender connection on the tank. After cleaning it up and getting a good connection my half tank turned into an empty one. Looks like my last cruise drained all the gas but it got me home.... The only gas left was what was in the fuel bowl and over those couple of idle weeks sitting idle it must have evaporated out.
Put a gallon in and got the gauge to register, and it started right up. It made it to the gas station and after filling it up I finally got some cruising in.
Moral to the story, don't let your Ghia sit too long and keep track of your miles as these aftermarket senders can't be trusted .....
Dave
P.S. the tripmeter indicated I got 250 miles out of that last tank.... _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia, the Dragon slayer.... |

No trips for the long weekend so had lots of time to work on the Ghia!
Finished installing trunk cover and liner I fabricated.
Also concerned about not being visible enough so installed LED DRLs. Now I don't have to drive around with my headlights on during the day.

Thanks Tico! Actually you have to really be close to notice. I made sure to keep them inside the grille so as not to mess up the front. Same reason I installed the 3rd brake light inside the rear glass. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

Looks great! Would you be willing to share any templates you might have created? There was a thread some time ago about making a template available as a pdf file, but it sputtered out. _________________ '71 Ghia cabriolet |

Thanks! The rear is a 5 inch LED that I wired and installed inside the rear glass. I just made sure to place it as close as I can to the glass to minimize any interior reflection.

Thanks! I did make a template out of cardboard which I now regret throwing out in the recycling bin. It's quite easy to make though. I used fairly thin packing cardboard which made it easy to work around the area I want to cover. A wide one would be ideal otherwise you'll have to tape two together so it will cover not only the width of the trunk but also the sides. The template of the cover for the back of the dash I also made out of cardboard then transferred on to fibreboard then covered with the same material I used to cover the "false" speaker panel I made for the rear speakers. I am currently in the finishing stage of making up the barrier right behind the spare tire (to prevent stuff in the trunk from rolling into the spare tire well) and if you still need it I can lay the whole thing out and either PM you or post the measurements here. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"
