Replaced the tie rod ends to better fit the drop spindles I bought. Will also replace the ball joint boots, they are in good shape, just need new rubber.

Only thing I've done recently is hooked it up to a maintenance charger to keep the battery healthy. Salt is all over the roads here, so it will take some time and a good rain to clean the roads up to be Ghia-worthy
I did find a photo I was missing of the Ghia. I posted the original of it parked in front of a barn back in 2010, and found the barn had come down this past summer. At least the Ghia has held up fairly well. Below is both images from 2010 and 2016 pasted together...

Pulled the wiper assembly to clean and refurbish. Glad I did, needs a lot of love. Looking good already though.

Shaved the dash cutouts. On my way to a painted dash.
Before
After
Also prepping to repair the half assed front fender/headlight area. Half of the edge where the headlight bucket was attached was shaped bondo. The bucket was welded too far down from the tip of the fender, leaving an 1/8th inch gap between the headlight ring and the top of the fender.

The dash and wiper looks nice. Good job so far.
I like the painted dash look and am thinking of going that route with my '71. Did you weld and grind down the indentions? _________________ 1971 Ghia Coupe |

No... JB Weld. <Cringes> I used it with my 70 beetles molding holes. Worked great. Although I am being taught how to mig weld, maybe I should have just done that. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. I dropped off the Ghia to Gary Stone last week to take care of my driver side rocker. The paint in front of the rear tire has started to bubble. It had been 11 years since a pan off resto and I do drive her. Karmann is stored in a secure but unheated garage and has been caught out in the weather a few times in the past. I'm not really surprised that rust finally appeared.
When the Ghia was first restored the rockers were sound but as we all know this is a prime rust area. As Gary started repairs he notified me that most of the left side rocker skin was probably starting to rust from the inside. So, instead of a 12" section ahead of the rear wheel it turned out to be most of the rocker skin. The right passenger side has managed to stay rust free and didn't need repair. The inner structured were sound and just needed treated with rust preventative. Here's some pics of the repairs.

Welded in the new headlight clip... Tired of waiting for buckets to come in stock. Bit the bullet and paid the 300% marked up ones on eBay. The only ones I could find in the world.
As you can see, there is a HUGE gap on the outer edge. The POs body work was not so good. It looks as though the cut the fender and took out about a half inch, then welded it back together. Then slapped an incredible amount of Bondo on it. Not sure why. I will be cutting it back open allowing it to naturally form to the headlight clip. Then welding in a wedge to fill the gap. My repair will drastically reduce the amount of filler needed to finish the body work. Will post pics of the end result. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

Love the color. I like the custom gauges holder. Can't wait to see your KG when it's done. No build thread?? _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

HERE IS THE PERFECT LOCATION - The Ghia Forum. The Samba loves to see restoration projects...it's what we're here for.
I would load the pictures here in the Samba Gallery first. If you're finding it a chore (you can load them in batches of 10) do it in easy stages over a few days....there's no hurry. _________________ John.
