In '85 Kresge died in a plane crash. Shortly after the funeral, his wife passed. None of their children were old enough to run the business so it faded away. That certainly places in the top ten of unusual dealership closings, now don't it!

Would love to find a plate frame from there....to go along with the sticker on my decklid.

Scott Motors in Washington, PA. (Pittsburgh area)
ca. 1970:
My uncle bought a 412 new there, then my mother worked there on the sales staff from '78 to about '82...it was VW & Mazda then... first female sales rep in PA.
I used to have a lot of BIG promo posters, mostly Scirocco & RX-7 racing stuff, sold them on Ebay long ago. Unfortunately no other goodies in our posession.
I had my just-puchased, mint '73 Thing serviced there after getting stranded by a clogged carb jet, it came in on a flatbed (this was in '88 ) the entire staff was pressed up against the glass, bugeyed.
It converted to a Dodge dealer in the '90s, was vacant for a while, and is now a Goodwill, in the original dealer building. The used car building was knocked down, and now an Autozone stands there.
There's still a Scott Motors, used cars, in Pittsburgh, not sure if it's related.
I also grew up next door to Don Yenko, of Yenko Camaro fame, he had a Chevy dealership out Rt. 19, he was a race driver, then he put together factory hotrods using the Chevy special options program... big bucks for one of those cars now. Camaros & Novas with Corvette drivetrains from the factory.[img][/img] _________________ '86 Syncro CHC Top AAZ Turbodiesel

Agreed. Finding them on the internet has not worked for me either. No luck with Volkswagen Of America as well. If they have archives they are keeping it a secret.
I think the local library or newspaper archives may be the only answer to photos or ads
All the old time VW people who had photos are gone too.
Great to see the dealer photos published here. |

Lets see, what I believe is la habra meltbeke vw, is now a used car dealership
The norwalk dealership is now a auto auction site, though if you drive around back, they still have two 10'-20' vw signs. _________________

Here in Bellingham the original location of the beloved VW sales lot was abandoned (sold out) to a McDonalds! The dealer moved across town to auto row and upgraded to the now outdated late 90's looking dealership. Whatever, I have pictures of the old dealer still. Somewhere. Awesome classic A-frame with VW incorporated into the woodwork in the front. I miss it, I will never forget peering through the glass as a teen to see the first New Beetle that came in. My Dad bought a 73 Bug there, I drive it now. Times change. _________________ The best things in life aren't Things

over the other side of the pond in Kent UK i used to work at the Audi in Bexley. This was Whitehouse VW. The whitehouse then moved into audi in the 70-80's. They sold up and now sell chryslers and alfas in another location. They still have vw parts gathering dust nothing spectacular, a 412 front grill that sort of thing. The original guys have retired years ago but had some great stories of cutting the rear windows of bugs and grafting in big windows during the 60's. I mentioned that i had a T3 and they showed me photos of going to the launch of the 1500 in germany. |

Going from the 1975 distributors and dealers list in The Samba archives area, the two SLC dealers were:
Strong VW at 679 South Main St - now a Salvation Army depot, although Strong's are still a VW dealer at 1070 South Main St, SLC.
Volkswagen Intermountain at 3711 South State St - now Murdock Hyundai. They were still there in 1996 at least (when they added the Hyundai franchise to Land Rover and a couple others), and lots of hits on a Google search, but no date as to when they lost the franchise (possibly when VW South Towne started up in Jordan or Ken Garff VW in SLC).
OUtside SLC:
Jones Motor Company of Cedar City is now Imperial Window and Door Inc
Morris Volkswagen of Logan is now Industrial Tool and Supply
Roy Strong Motors of Ogden is now Westland Hyundai
Scarty's Sale & Service of Price - dealer list just says 'East of the City'
Chuck Peterson Motors of Provo - now Certified Auto Repair _________________ Ben

In the late 1960's/ early 1970's, on Florida Street (the main drag through Hemet) right near Yale Avenue, was Bill Worsham VW. I went back in the early 90's, and it had turned into "Friendship Motors" or "Bulldog Motors", I forget which, but was a used car lot. Under their sign advertising used cars, was the original \X/ Bubblehead sign, and one that said "\X/ Used cars" They had told me if I wanted to go through the trouble of taking down their sign, removing the VW sign, and putting their signs back up, I could have those old, useless, worthless, blue and while dealership signs.
Never got back there to do it, the used cars sign was a neon sign, heavy as hell, and I would have had to rent a crane to get it down in one piece. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story
