Bought this rack from a little old lady (seriously). Her husband purchased it new from our local vw dealership and used it on an early 60s bug to carry his canoe to Maine to fish. I haven't seen another like it but I'm sure they're out there. Pics aren't the best its relatively flat without sides.

I looking to get a different rack for my bug...I want to go with one of the all metal that sit low on the car almost hitting the roof. Anybody know what that style is called? Mine right now is your STD rack with the crappy wood slats. Thank for any info

Got this for I *think* $20 at a yard sale a few years ago... the wood was all rotted, and the rack itself was pretty bent up but I replaced the wood/varnished the heck out of it/used all brass fasteners. Pretty happy with the way it turned out. It's just installed on the '73 super for photo purposes... it's going on my '66, she's just been put away for the winter.

The really cool part was, the guy who I bought the rack from told me to come back with a truck in a few weeks, and gave me literally a shed full of aircooled parts.
