My wife acted like she liked the car when we were first dating. Now she cant stand it. She says I would rather be with my VWs than her.
Lately, she often comments about what she thinks its worth and how much she can get for it, and that if I ever did anything to force a divorce, shes going after my '55 first. I told her I'd burn it to the ground before she could get her hands on it. haha _________________ Make it three yards, motherf*****, and we'll have us an automobile race

| My wife insisted that I get the Ghia, and ended up making it my Father's Day present. Only time she got upset was when she found out it was originally an autostick that was converted to manual. "I could be driving it!" was her comment. |

My wife has offically became Ok with the 65 sunroof! drove to Bugout with her in the passanger seat for a 3.5 hour drive there and another 3.5 hours back. no comments about structural intergity or engine problems. even let me run wild at the show and ask tons of questions about how things work or about some model types. i think i see another VW at the house soon. lots and lots of ghia and single cab questions. _________________ The Whingnut

I'm assuming that she's okay with it seeing how she said I can get another if we got to Hawaii for my next enlistment. She only said it had to be a convertible ghia or a thing. _________________ Josh

That's great! Mine won't drive a manual, but at least she enjoys riding in it. She fell asleep on the freeway last night, so I know she's comfortable with the car.

| I won't say my wife loves old Beetles but she does have one of her own. I bought it for her last year and she drives it to shows, VW cruises, etc. I haven't seen her grab the keys and take it to town for an errand but at least she is willing to enjoy it with the local club, etc. |

Yeah, but did you ever fake liking anything about her to get into her pants when dating?
Suggestion: put the car in another relative's name. Besides, it's separate property if it predated the marriage.
Advice to those contemplating marriage: Be sure your VW is in the pre-nup! |

My wife is "understanding" on most days with my "agenda" Thankfully shes a car girl.
I realized about 15 years ago, VWs were being extinguished at an alarming rate. I also realized the days of $100 Beetles in the back yards of America were disappearing. The cars were either being trashed/crushed or the prices were begining to creep up. I had been somewhat out of the VW seen for a period of about 5 years prior to that, working, providing a home and starting a family. Once I was able to jump back in prices had climbed. So when I could find reasonably priced VW's, I would snatch them up and set them aside, even though I always get the "You know!! You cant save them all!!" speech. During this period I would work on other owners VW's, earning enough money for the next "find".
Im getting to the point......really.
On one ocassion my neighbor purchased a fiberglass dune buggy, and wanted it tuned and clutched. No problem. Once finished the wife came outside while I was warming it up for a test drive, I had noticed she had been eyeing it when ever she was around it. She wanted "to go too....". ALLRIGHT. She ended up driving it and loved the "attention grabbing feel". Growing up together I knew she loved the attention in a hot rod car. A light bulb came on. I offered to build her a Dune Buggy if it would ease some of the frustration I had unleashed with my "agenda". Needless to say I found an abandoned 69 kit with many parts to go along, and I built her a Buggy. Best part no input during the build except color choice. It helped me in the long run to take some of the pressure off of the stashed projects.
The Bottom line... As long as the wife is happy so am I. _________________ aka Ken

My wife is not bothered by my vw obsession. We're both retired and she never(almost) complains about spending on the cars. I've been into the old car hobby since the 70s when I bought a Model A. When I sold the A, around 1975, I bought a 62 vw vert for $25.00. A little rusty and not running and its still in that condition sitting in my garage. That was my start with vws as a hobby. I knew vws would be coming on but unfortunately didn't buy as many as I should have at the time. Anyway, there have been several in and out our yard over the years and she has been OK with all the nonsense. As long as I hide the ones in the yard there's no problem.
She did balk once when I wanted to go cross country in a 21 window. Only, she said, if I put Lincoln continental seats in the front and a sealy posturepedic mattress in the back. Still waiting to make our first cc trip. _________________ 67 zenith blue sunroof

my wife doesnt really mind me being into the hobby at all. in fact it was a long trip in my bus where i first realized she was the one. 8hrs in a 1970 bus, 40 degrees outside and little to no heat. we could have taken another car but i really wanted to visit my brother in my bus. she was so cool about it. she didnt complain once. in fact she said it was one of the funnest adventures ever. i realized then and there she was perfect lol. she even thought it would be cool to have a bug too. after i wanted a porsche 914 she said that she would be cool with it as long as i parted with one car. so i sold my brother my bug (to keep it in the family) and bought the 914. now she may be a little weary about the 914 because i recently have made a few very large purchases for it. i think she will come around once she sees all the changes i made and how much nicer it drives and looks. she hasnt really ever complained or nagged when i spend so much time working on whatever project it might be at the time. she knows that i am happy doing it and that i could be doing a lot worse things. _________________ '61 Beetle

I know this is a "what does your wife think"... thread, but it does work the other way round too.
I'm "The Wife" and the bug owner in the family. "The Hubby" likes the bug so long as he's driving it, mostly because he likes making it go sideways around corners.
If he's the passenger, its a different story: he complains about all the rattling, how small the cabin is, how loud the motor is and how it sounds like a horse with diarrhea. If I can wheedle him in to giving me a hand when I'm working on it then he immediately starts in on a very long soliloquy about how stupidly designed it is and how every car he has ever owned (many) are sooo much easier to work on (with detailed examples).
Despite his complaining, I'm pretty sure that deep down he loves it more than he hates it. He just likes to make noise cos he knows that my car is more awesome than his |
