Also posted this over at the VWAR forums, but I just wanted to spread the love on my free day, I am just sitting here waiting for some guidance:

I had an issue with a broken contact wire, I fitted a new one.

Well, I have the wire and contact replaced. Now it appears I can get it into gear. One curious thing is that I can't get it out of gear without shutting the car off. The shifter won't move into neutral with any reasonable amount of force. I am going to disassemble the whole shifter column to see if the bushing is shot.

Also, when I put it into reverse, it squeals. I will record it and upload it for people to hear if this makes no sense. Squeals until I shut the car off in reverse. If anyone is around and can give me guidance, I can work on this for the next 12 hours today, so any thoughts posted ASAP would be swell.

Thanks as always for all your help everyone! Very Happy
Patrick

Update:

Ok, just took it down off the stands and tested. I can get it into reverse instantly, no issues [just that horrible squealing]. Drives great! ...can't disengage the gear. I shut it down, disengage the gear while turned off. Start it up! Fires up great Put it into first! It's back to the car I know and love. ...can't disengage it again. Sad Shut it off. Disengage while off.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

When the car is running, if you push or pull on the shifter can you hear the servo/clutch disengage?

Does it otherwise shift normally when the engine is not running?

I'm sorry, I'll rephrase. When the car is running, I can not move the shifter out of the position it is in once I put it into gear. When it is off, I can move it around freely, into any gear position.

While I don't have an auto nor a 71... I do know in my manual for the 69 says if your auto stick won't shift, first thing to do is check the fuse (near coil in engine). 2nd step is to check all contacts, something may have come loose or a ground isn't grounded anymore.

There maybe an adjustment needed down by the clutch servo ( located down by the drivers side on the trans. ). It is a small adjustment but it is needed for propper working of the shifting on a Auto-Stick. Look in a Haynes or Bently manual and you will see how it is done. The symptoms would be: It shifts with the engine off but not with the engine running...which sounds like your problem.

I can shift it INTO gear while the engine is running. I cannot change gears once I engage a gear. The stick will not move.

I did clean the points, I wirebrushed and scoured everything of any grease and dirt. I will check the clutch servo. It is at 2.5 threads, and the shifting is very responsive going into gear. The stick just won't move out to neutral unless I shut the car off.

I assume you adjusted the contacts after your wiring repair?
The contacts can also be lightly filed Or, use some fine sandpaper
on a piece of wood... So the contacts are Flat

the spec for the Gap should be .010-.016 which, should be
close to a 1/2 turn of the lever from Full contact.
Make sure to tighten the lever assembly properly too!

Alrighty, I got the gear shifting solved. Runs like a top again. But that squealing happens if I put the car into reverse for a short bit of time. It also happened after I had parked the car and taken it out of gear. In neutral, when I clicked the key off, it squealed for the last couple cycles of the engine it seemed. Does not make this sound while in gear and driving.

Any ideas? Rolling Eyes

You still have a release bearing like a stick shift.
And a pilot bearing...And also a ball bearing that is in the bell housing

What was your shifting problem, may I ask?

That is fixed, now I can shift into gear and drive normally. Everything looks good now. Very Happy

But I have a squealing when in reverse or when the engine is shutting down. Very peculiar. Probably worrisome? Confused

Oh I'm sorry. I pulled the shifter apart and reseated everything, I think the contact gap was off.

I also reseated the spade connector and confirmed the contacts are all clean as a bean. They are very clean. Smile

The squealing worries me though.

I had the rivets on the flywheel come loose on me not too long ago, but it was more of a 'rattling' sound...but the rivets were really loose. I removed the 4 bolts that secure the torque converter to the flywheel off and I could move the flywheel aprox. an 1/8" inch of play. There are about 10 rivets on the flywheel and perhaps they are wearing ( loose ) and making the sound you are hearing. Just a suggestion. Replacing the flywheel is the fix for that, IF that is your problem.

I'll just go drive it around the block and record myself doing it. I'll post it on youtube so you can all hear the sound. I've never heard anything like it, and that worries me.

There's a recording I just took, sorry about the crummy phone quality. Let me know what you think?

It's probably because the car is lying on it's side! Smile

But seriously, can't tell a thing from that poor video.
