I wonder if someone from outside the area called and bid the price up so a local couldn't get a good deal? |
Well, that certainly looks like the case here. Tough call though, the ad still says 1700 and it also says price reduced so he must have had a hard time selling it locally.
What should be done? Should this thread be terminated so no one knows about these "deals"? I don't have an answer, but without this thread, how many old buses would end up at the crusher when locals are not interested? Are we helping to keep these buses on the road? I would like to think we are. At what cost? I have no idea. I can see both sides. _________________ '03 MV |

I can see both sides as well. Since I have posted a couple, here is my 2 cents.
A review of craigslist in most markets will turn up a bunch of "bus wanted" ads, so there are plenty of people (local and otherwise) actively looking for deals. I don't have a "wanted" listing posted in my local market but I do have a notice set up that emails me any time a VW bus is listed for sale in my market. In addition, there are plenty of resources that allow you to do the same thing on a national basis. I use CSmart. Anyone looking across state lines is most likely using that tool rather than constantly scanning the "Good deal on Bay Buses or parts thread".
My goal in posting good deals here or elsewhere on the site was to help my fellow Samba members, period. Having said that, this type of post does stray from the intent of the OP ("What has anyone else scored lately?"). Either way, I'll stop posting. I'm here to give back to the community, not piss people off. _________________ 1970 Crew Cab |

I understand both sides, too. I just figure if it's not something I want, someone else will get it close to home. I sometimes browse CL ads outside of my immediate area, just for fun. If I see a good deal on something, I try to contact someone I know in the area or someone on here about it. I have done that several times.
I do not set up any ad alerts. I guess I just don't care that much about making an immediate deal or getting the jump on someone else. I have been burned by folks that call about a car/part after I have already made a deal on something, then they offer the seller way more money for it.
This happened recently with some fake Porsche Fuchs wheels on the local CL. Pissed me off. The seller was at fault for trying to change our deal, but the high bid asshole was willing to screw me over, and he couldn't even come pick them up and hand the seller cash. Fuck him. _________________ nothing |

fleabay find, 76 panelbus RHD for 3300 (at the moment) not too bad of a deal (but reserve not yet met, so probably wont sell for anywhere near that price. just thought it was a neat bus, I guess) |

There's some crusty stuff hiding under that vinyl wrap and the RR corner is definitely in need of a full replacement. It's got an upright motor, which is probably a plus for some folks scurred of the T4.
The fact that it's a double slider makes it worth quite a bit though, so it'll go a lot higher or fail to meet reserve. |

Awful pics, but looks like a great deal. If it really is as rusty as the owner claims, it would make a good donor if you had a clean dry shell.
If I lived near Portland, I would already own it. _________________ nothing |
