Not meaning to be negative but what is wrong with a nice simple tent?

Not a thing! I would love to see pictures of people camping in general with their beetles. That set up with that 67 sure is neat!

Good question, I'll take a shot at it...

Tents take time to pitch, tents add weight, if it rains you put it away wet, no poles to keep track of, you can add the option of a Eberspacher heater with timer to a bug for a quick warm up on cold nights (if you have the cash), if you're camping and don't like your neighbors you can put up your seats and drive to a new location, you have a radio, a light, and two ash trays, you have better insulation from the cold, being in a bug muffles outside noises or inside noises, and a bear can rip through a tent quicker than a bug. Smile

If you want to compare it to a Westy there's more head room in the bed area. I compared my SO-69 to my bug.

not really any safe ways. you can look in some off road catalogs but you would have to cut the steering shaft to put the connector in. that would make all sorts of issues for turn signals and such. most quick release setups are designed for off road purposes or racing. things like a horn or turn signals aren't terribly important to them.

Been wanting to mod some low back seats to camp in my bug for a while. I have to be pretty wasted to sleep in my bug the way it is. I also like to get to work real early so I can take a nap but cant really do it in the bug

I wanted to keep this in this thread, even though it is old, but I found this artwork in a shop this weekend and am trying to find out anything I can about it. I can't tell if it was someone just making a piece of "art", or if this was a printer proof of some ad artwork or something. It seems like a really bad ad, or a piece of a larger brochure. Anyone recognize it?

This is a cool thread. I had a 74 std and me and my girlfriend would tent camp out of it allot. Then we got an71 Tin top westy which was bad ass. Had to get rid of it now I'm in a 67 bug.

My question is, has anyone done a DIY seat layback bracket or anything to an early seat? Or somehow modify the origional brackets? It would be sweet to sleep in the bug

And I'm sorry to say that was the first thing I thought of as well.

PostPosted: Thu Apr 17, 2014 8:39 am    Post subject: The Camping Bug Sleeps Two! Reply with quote

Earlier in the year, I was stranded in Wildomar California in my '69 bug with a busted valve. I was saved by Relic VW, and this is what I found.

The owner told me that the old man who designed the Camping Bug device had stopped in umpteen years ago and hand delivered a number of scrolls of diagrams detailing the construction and installation of the Camping Bug camping conversion. She said she has somewhere a box with the rest of these scrolls partially eaten by mice.

But, the photos I took were of the surviving blueprint, in its entirety, of The Camping Bug.

I hope this is of some use to you, and happy motoring!
