Charles Lindbergh mentioned camping in his 59 beetle:
A tall man in a small car, Lindbergh slept in the car on trips to Beirut, Egypt, around the Mediterranean and throughout Europe. "I suppose that, over the years, I have spent more than a hundred nights in it," Lindbergh recalled. "I found that I could take the right front seat out, take its back off, reverse its position in the slide grooves, and with the use of an air mattress, make a comfortable full length bed."

Growing up very near Mt Hood, camping up there was very common. Any given weekend, we would pack up and drive out into national forest logging roads and find a good place. We would normally tent camp, but if it decided to dump rain, I would move my 66's front seats and rear bench and support rail into the tent. Then, roll out the mat and bag in the long body-shaped well that exists after the seats are out. I had pop outs, so it didn't get too foggy. I stayed very dry and comfortable. I would set up a 'kitchen' on a peice of cut plywood over the gas tank, with a propane stove and some work area. The hood propped open kept it dry.
While I was working on my current car, I eyeballed the seatless pan wells one night and gave it a try. A tighter fit (really crowded my shoulders) but still comfortable. I am surprised my wife didn't make me stay out there! _________________ Plate of shrimp |

I remember that movie - Purple Vein...I'd go camping with Appolonia in a VW. There are alot more jokes with this one but I'll stop. |

Earlier in the year, I was stranded in Wildomar California in my '69 bug with a busted valve. I was saved by Relic VW, and this is what I found.
The owner told me that the old man who designed the Camping Bug device had stopped in umpteen years ago and hand delivered a number of scrolls of diagrams detailing the construction and installation of the Camping Bug camping conversion. She said she has somewhere a box with the rest of these scrolls partially eaten by mice.
But, the photos I took were of the surviving blueprint, in its entirety, of The Camping Bug.
I hope this is of some use to you, and happy motoring!

So, what do you do with the seats while sleeping I wonder? |

I think if you're planning a big trip, you just slide out the seat and leave it at home. Perhaps, if you have an older chair that is a little "shorter", you can devise a way to compress it down, or fully recline the chair to add as a support below the sleeping area.
I'm just throwing ideas out, but thats my estimation. |

That's the one I was just gonna post. Best doc on Beetles ever. Guy traveled around the world like three times in his bug. Sleeping in it. He even shows plans for his bed set up briefly in it. Some guy in Canada owns the bug now. And f-ing lowered it. I couldn't believe it. It's a museum piece IMHO. |

Was a museum piece. Yeah he lowered it, I guess it is his to what he wants. Should it be put somewhere, sure but in the end it cost money to put cars in museums. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |
