It doesn't seem very difficult, my girlfriend rebuilt her's before she learned to adjust the valves.
Busdepot.com is your way to go for cheap parts, or a local VW yard, shops don't usually mark gaskets up more than what shipping would be anyway. |

Just taking it apart and putting it in a can of carb/parts cleaner, then rinsing and blowing it out with high pressure compressed air, and reassembline with new gaskets is easy enough. Now if the throttle shaft bushings have wear in them, your average do-it-yourselfer won't be able to fix that, you need to have a carb specialist do that. And one thing about the 30PICT-2, there is a small metering screw you cannot adjust or remove, it's set up from the factory that way, and I've seen it where if there's a lot of crap inside the carb from it sitting for years, you might not be able to get that part of the carb clean. So sometimes you can't get that carb to run very well, that's one of the reasons that carb is my least favorite Solex. |

Andy is so right... the 30 pict 2 is a decent running carb ( especially with the correct stock vac distributor) IF it is tunable... if the carb does not respond to adjustment after rebuild chances are the internal passage and the "factory set" screw that is behind a plug in the guts of the carb is clogged/blocked and it's not worth messing with.
And rebushing the throttle shafts is a bit more set up/tooling/work than the average home mechanic can handle. |

Just wanted to second that it is very easy. Get a lot of space, the right tools, and be patient.
If you have some serious blockage let the parts sit in paint thinner, did charms for mine.
I have a 30 pict 3, but I am guessing it is similar enough. I do know I removed the one jet I was not supposed to and it ended up going back in fine and running great... but maybe I fluked. |

Seemingly so... BUT as Andy pointed out the 30 pict 2 is unique in the fact that it has that "pre set mixture screw" in the carb body behind a plug... you can't get to it.... ( check out a nice cross section diagram in the Bentley or other good resource/manual, not just an "exploded diagram")
We are not saying not to try and rebuild it... just need to know when to "throw in the towl" on various model carbs for various reasons when a rebuild/good cleaning does not make it run any better and your sure the carb is a DUD...

Yeah, exactly. I happen to have that bentley diagram in my folder of FTP images, (look at item 27) plus a pic I took myself and added a caption...:

Odd, yeah sort of. That was VW's first attempt at finer controls of the emissions output of the engine via tweaking the carburetor design. It's not surprising they didn't get it quite right. The 30PICT-3 was better. |
