|
|
Ok guys can you tell me the correct model radio and if possible supply pictures on one with the faceplate for a 1963 Notchback? I am trying to get the interior back to original and my birth certificate did not mention a radio model. Many thanks. _________________ "If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?....... We might, if they screamed all the time, and for no good reason."

I believe it would be a blaupunkt large button LMU radio, but I would think it would depend on the destination port, and here in the US, it would have been up to the dealer, although that's not really the case with a notchback _________________ Stop dead photo links! Here's the original radio in my '63 Squareback:
It would probably have a Blaupunkt if someone bought one when new but it could be any 1963 model.
Or it could be a later model if they purchased a radio later.
The one above is a "cheap" AM-only model.
In the USA a '63 would typically have a Sapphire I (AM) or a Sapphire II (AM/FM). But since Notchbacks were not sold in the USA in 1963... _________________ How to Post Photos

I have gotten conflicting information. Some have told me the correct radio for a 63 Notch is a Blaupunkt and some have said a Saphire I. _________________ "If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?....... For an early-pre 66 T3 its watever the person wanted at the time as well as what say a dealer had to offer the public. Blaupunkt is by far the most popular. It had a very strong rep as being a good radio back then. But a Saphire is too "correct" for the era as well as Motorola.
Remember the early cars didnt have a radio with them from VW so they were dealer and or personaly installed.

This are what the letters stand for..........
L=longwave, M=AM, K=SW and U=FM. _________________ "If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?....... We might, if they screamed all the time, and for no good reason."

Here's a very good website showning the different Blaupunk models. I was told that the model depended on your geographical location in Germany. Hence the reason why the radios are all named after major German cities.
For an excellent read on the radios used on VWs back in the day, spend some time on this website, you'll learn some new, old stuff

Here's what's in my '62 Notchback....I'd say definitely period era correct for '62 and '63. And they were considered an accessory then, if you want it bone stock, well then no radio!

anyone who needs help with their old radios, let me know. I have an awesome radio repair guy here in Colorado Springs. He repaired my '64 Blaupunkt Essen and the wife's '64 Shaub Lorenz picnic pull-out radio. Her radio had battery acid all over the inside from leaky batteries, and he was able to clean it up, and get it to work perfectly. The guy is a genius. _________________ '64 1500 'S' with sunroof

Adam! What's up brother! Push button dash switches - I don't think so. He's more of a vintage radio and TV guy. _________________ '64 1500 'S' with sunroof

Jeez, man, radios are removed by unbolting them. You don't have to cut them out of the dash!
