So...
Starter number 2? Also bad. Remanufactured in China bullshit!
Taking it back and going somewhere else, or saving up and getting a new Bosch starter, if they exist around here.
First, I think I'm going to try the 6v starter that came with the bug. It spins free...but really I was trying to avoid dealing with the whole transaxle starter bushing thing.
I'll work it out tomorrow...drinkin' High Life now.
Edit: Never mind on the 6v starter thing. 12v flywheel. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

My nickname for the turkis bug: the suction cup. Sucked to the ground, making diagnostics and component removal a PIA. I'm just waiting for the word to cut it...
And here are the lyrics to John the Revelator, buy Son House:
Tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Who's that writin', John the Revelator wrote the book of the seven seals
Now God walked down in the cool of the day, and called Adam by his name
But he refused to answer, 'cause he was naked and ashamed
So, tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Who's that writin', John the Revelator wrote the book of the seven seals
Now Christ had 12 apostles, and three he laid away
He said "Watch for me one hour, while I go yonder and pray"
And tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Who's that writin', John the Revelator wrote the book of the seven seals
Mary Margaret they were there, and they heard every word he said
Said "Go tell my disciples, I said meet me in Galilee"
And tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Who's that writin', John the Revelator wrote the book of the seven seals
Who's that writin', John the Revelator
Tell me who's that writin', John the Revelator
Who's that writin', John the Revelator wrote the book of the seven seals
Werd, suckers. |

So today was the Maiden Voyage for the Turdkis "suction cup" bug.
Got a reman Bosch starter from the local VW guy. It spins nice...and works every time.
I replaced my leaky fuel pump, did a little carb tweaking. Daniel came over and helped get that pesky passenger running board on. Then I hopped on Geico, got some insurance, and we headed to the local gas station, a couple of miles down the road.
I guess my rudimentary alignment worked ok. Handled well except for the steering box is a bit loose. Didn't notice any bump steer.
I think the H30/31 and 010 combo will work well, except that I might need to experiment with the jets a little. When cruising at speed, it runs a bit rough, but when I gas it, it goes. Might experiment with the timing a bit, too.
Anyway, first run sucessful! _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

Yay turdkis suction cup bug!
I stole some jets from Daniel, and the thing runs awesome now, except I have to tweak some idle settings a bit. The H30/31 and 010 combo is great - better than my matched 34pict3 and DVDA combo, I think.
Today I finally got the decklid, driver's side rear fender and running board on, all lights now work. Re-indexed the steering wheel, so it's straight now. License plates are on, too!
I just need to get the rear bumper on, adjust fuel pressure, grease up the beam, change the oil, and drive it a bit before the Springfield journey.
Daniel's got AAA, so that's cool! _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

So here it is. Today I got the back bumper on, and finished up a bunch of other stuff. I still haven't washed all the black crap off from it being stored in the woods.
I was a worthy goal, but I won't be driving it to Springfield Friday. The steering box is toast, and adjusting it does not help. I have a little over 1/8 of a turn of play in the steering wheel before the front wheels react at all. My first few test drives were on nice straight road and it was no problem. But combine a worn out steering box with a bit of bump steer and curvy roads...not safe.
Oh well. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

Yeah, a bunch of people were bitchin' at me for pussin' out...so I said fuck it and found a new box locally. I busted my ass, and it's in, and drives like a dream.
So I guess I'll have to wash the thing tomorrow. Not sure when we're leaving. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

Thanks for the pic, Daniel!
Here it is at the show:
So the bug made it about 400 miles round trip this weekend. Rode great, and handled awesome. I don't think I've ever had a vehicle with rebuilt spindles, new tie rods/ends, and a new steering box. Tight!
I'd like to thank:
Garner for the shop space, help, tools, badgering, and advice.
Daniel for the help with moving the thing, windows, engine install and various parts.
Drake for the engine cases, wheels and seat frames.
Mike and Lori @ B&C VW in Freeburg, MO for the tons of parts, and for building me a great engine.
The wife for not complaining about my complete absence this last couple of months.
Everybody here on the Samba for moral support, and anyone else I forgot.
There is much more work to do, so stay tuned for further updates. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

So I finally got a chance in between storms yesterday to scrub the moss/lichens/woods skank off the bug. I started with scotch brite pads, but ended up using #0000 steel wool just to cut through it.
Half the hood scrubbed:
Roof before:
Afters:
Of course it dulled up a bit when it dried, but I might try buffing it out a bit, and maybe some CLR and fine sandpaper on the roof. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.
