Thanks guys, I am glad you think the thread is useful.

Another tip: If the horn button is tight in the assembly, use a loose dull utility knife blade to get it started. The thin edge of the blade should wedge under the button easily.


Curious who you purchased your steering wheel from and how its holding up, cracks, breaks or any fading.

Im curious as well. And its funny that this post pops up just after I had to figure out how to pop the wheel loose on the 74.

Ive never owned an ACVW that the wheel didnt come loose after the nut was removed? The wheel on the 74 took some torque to get it to pop!

What gives? Or in this case - why dont it give?

Jason,

Have all yours been the factory wheels' first removal? I've heard horror stories of getting the wheel off the first time, then easy sliding after that.

I have a special made bus steering wheel puller that I paid $100 for. There have been times when it sounds like a gun going off when the wheel finally lets go. These wheels are just too delicate (and expensive) to damage using crappy tools so I invested in a proper one. It's just one of those tools that you don't use very often but is nice to have for those times when you really need it.

Early buses had a taper in the splines. They build up serious clamping pressure very quickly as you tighten the nut. The later buses have a simple straight cut to the splines.

Yes - factory fit - fist time removal.

And that sucker did pop when it came free.

Loosen the nut, spray some penetrating oil in there. Drive it around for a few days and it will come loose.
I said loosen the nut, I did not say take it off.

I pulled a tight one yesterday on my 69, it was a whore but my home made pulling washers worked again. Very Happy

Thanks for the great tutorial. Finally managed to pull mine this week too, using a 3-arm puller, home made washers and heat from an old hairdryer. Would never have guessed how tight that wheel could be!

Used this method yesterday to get a super stubborn wheel out of my 64 bus. Thanks to the guy who thought this idea up. It was a huge help!

anyone know if there is an aftermarket quick disconnect available for the bus steering wheel?

i installed some fold flat minivan seats up front and if the steering wheel was removed the driver seat could fold flat also allowing me to utilize the space up front for another sleeper...

Yes. Remember to avoid using the sterling lock as leverage. Rather, use your fingers pulling against one spoke of the wheel to get tightening torque.

I'm not sure what you mean by this? If you mean that somehow the 27mm nut can be used to remove the wheel then I'd be learning something. I spent over $100 for my VW Bus specific steering wheel puller and have found it worth every penny.

I think he means pressing the wheel back onto the splined shaft. In that case the 27mm nut will press the wheel on past where we can push it with our hands.

I used the gear puller and washer technique and the old wheel came off no problem. New wheel installed no problem! Finally a small fix to my bus that was not a battle!

Wheel installed using this very helpful how-to as suggested by someone on here you don't need a puller as wheel came off with no effort. Result lovely jubbly. Notice added matching tacho
