|
|
I am preparing to star working on my Driver's side Rear window, and need to verify everything I need before starting.
The present vent window will open but appears to be so rusted out on the bottom that it could push out.
1. Does this mean that I need a new(used) metal frame?
If i'm understanding the pictures I have seen, there is the main window seal, then also a seal for the vent window itself.
2. Is this the only parts I need to repair the entire window?
Thanks _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

The bus vent window is chrome. The Westy vent window is black. I have not seen any good used black windows.
Yes, you will need to remove the big window first, then the vent window. Pull it to the rear about an inch and then it tilts out from the bottom.
Or you can put in one window from the pass side and forget about the vent window.
The bottom pivot rusts and then shears off..... then the window flops when open.
I had another person ask me for a vent window. Sent him pics and a price. Never heard back......
Here are pics of it, ready to use as is with a very nice seal:

Hiya bare,
I have mine out right now also.
The rear vent window (hmmmm....all the rear vent windows) have a frame that lives inside a rubber seal. Be careful when you go to remove that frame and seal assembly. The frame has two metal tags that should be bent over the pinch weld in the window opening. Look for those two tags on the front side of the window. You'll have to peel back some of the rubber seal on the inside of the bus to locate them.
Only after you get the entire assembly out will you be able to get a good look at the frame. Many are not in very good shape due to rust and corrosion. This is especially true of the area around the bottom post.
Basically if you have a new seal (and your frame is OK - be sure to clean it thoroughly and repaint it) you're set to go for reinstallation. I'm sitting on mine right now because my assistant (my wife) has a bum wrist right now. The vent window seal is a beast all unto itself and has nothing to do with the regular window seal.
The vent window can be taken out and reinstalled without having to remove the main window. Matter of fact that's just what I'm doing. _________________ Mike

Thanks for the responses and the photos, Karl.
So, if I'm understanding correctly, if the bottom part is rusted, there are no parts that can really be replaced on it? So, if part of the frame is rusted out, I just need a whole new frame ? _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

I see what you mean Karl about black framed Vent Windows. The classifieds are full of chrome ones, but no black ones. I wonder if the chrome could be sandblasted off? _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

Someone should snap up that window Karl has. Good ones are very hard to come by. During my restoration, I made one good one from 2 or 3 so-so ones. Took the bottom pivot and welded it onto a good window. New seals and painted the chrome window frame after scuffing it up. Still not the same, but it looks good.
Also blasted the outer frame and POR15'd it.. came out real nice. _________________ - Brian -

Thanks. I just emailed Shane about them. But they are chrome, I just searched the classifieds and emailed a bunch of folks looking for black ones, so we'll see what turns up. Thanks for keeping your eye out for me. _________________ My Bus Restoration Blog

I think I have a couple of black ones, I will check this afternoon and PM you!
My Westy had a solid window on that side and I think I will keep it in. Stripped 2 Westys, so one should be good.

If it's just the latch then the window can stay in, but you will need a super tiny drift to punch out the split pin that retains the arm to the window frame. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Karl sold us a really nice vent window and I can tell you that we were very pleased with it. His items are as close to NOS as you will get. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
