I'm wanting to upgrade my 74 bug 1600 dual port with some used IDF 40 carbs...Which requires me to upgrade from my stock exhaust. The problem is i still want the car to look stock. Are there any stock looking exhausts/mufflers with better performance than the actual stock exhaust?
Thanks, Max. |

No, and you may want to put a cam similar to the Engle 110 cam and better heads with the 40 mm carbs. |

A good muffler shop or header shop like S&S Headers maybe able to duplicate it. |

maxenmity, for the mild upgrades to your engine i highly recomond that you just use a standard header and single quiet pack muffler. that will be about the best bang for your buck for exhaust upgrades that will match your other upgrades.
if i wanted to run a "stock looking" exhaust on a performance engine i would run this.
http://www.csp-shop.de/cgi-bin/shop2/shop_main.cgi?func=start&wkid=23683921911
and in my opnion that mid-america exhuast you posted above is junk, its not a header. _________________ 67 bug x3

yeah i agree it is pricey. and for future reference, CSP has a US distributer based out of california.

though that site doesnt list that particluar exhuast, im sure they could get it though.
but again for your set up i think a standard header with a single QP or similar muffler would be the best bet. most of the inexpensive exhuast systems that exit out of the stock locations are pretty much junk compared to a real header/muffler combo. _________________ 67 bug x3

Can you link me a muffler that uses stock headers? I'm pretty sure i would have to upgrade the headers to use a QP. |

im confused ....a stock exhaust does not have any header pipes. a singe QP needs a header. _________________ 67 bug x3

i too really like the look of the csp exhaust but the price seems a little extreme. i think someone else had a great idea when they said have a local exhaust shop or vw shop make one for you. i know alot of times its cheaper to buy prefab than build your own but not in this case.
this guy makes some bad ass stuff also, but bring your man wallet...

also the kevesite.nl has some cool pics of a tour he took at the remmele shop _________________ dcdubs/glcustoms

CIP1 nows carries the CSP exhaust systems. CSP also has an outlet in California(if they are still open). Exhaust system is not cheap but sure looks good. You have a couple of options on the finish Aluminum coated or stainless. CIP1 has a banner ad and they were showing this item in some feature ads here a few weeks back. |

I don't like the heat of the mufflers near my heads.
Too many bends robbing HP, too expensive for what it is doing.
A single quiet pack, and always walking in front of the car so you never see it solves all your problems. _________________ Good Luck

For a beefed up 1600, the EuroSport is definitely an option.

Granted, merged systems are the way to go, but if you want that stock look without breaking the bank...
These exhausts are never going to compare to a quality merged system, but they are not without their merits. I'm running it on my 1776, (110 cam, Kads, mild P&P) no problems and love the sound. I was running a merged single, but was tired of srcapping out on driveways, and missed the pea shooters. The difference in performance wasn't that great and the car runs smooth and cool. Not sure how far I'd push this exhaust, as far as displacement/cam/ and carb combos, but is fine for mild upgrades.

Hi Buggin 74
Is that the muffler from Classic Vee dubs?:
A1-3417
A1 GT2 STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST 1300CC TO 1600CC COMPLETE WITH ALL HARDWARE TYPE 1 AND GHIA
Price (Inc GST) :
$284.99
I have the cheaper standard (non stainless one).
Re: You're comment "theyre a lot better built than the normal ones and have larger diameter piping" in what way do you think they are built better, and larger pipe diameter than stock or the cheaper non stainless variety?
Your reply would be appreciated. |
