Last question: The ball check valve between the accelerator nozzle and pump diaphragm is frozen in place. What is the best way to get at the ball? Pull the brass nipple out of the top where the cover mates to the body, or remove the center plug with the hole in it behind the diaphragm? |
A shot of compressed air should do it. Hopefully it will not blow things apart. Also, just a good soak with carb cleaner might do it. |
If that doesn't work pull the vertical plug in the float chamber, I keep a long metric machine screw in my carb tool kit (sorry, can't recall the size, M5 perhaps?), it sticks up slightly above the top of the float chamber when screwed into the plug and a small nail puller like crowbar pulls it out like butter. Another option is a shorter screw and a short length of metal tube with a slightly larger ID than the plug, screw it in and keep going until the plug comes free. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

No that's the outlet, there's one deeper down about 3/4" from the floor of the float chamber on the side of the bump the pump chamber forms.
Holy sh*t that's one dirty nasty looking carb _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Uh-hu. The outlet ball check valve is the one that is stuck on this carb.

And for the record, the inlet check valve works fine on this carb, and both the inlet and outlet ball check valves work fine on the other carburetor. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Always good stuff there. I personally like the Bentley manuals way of adjusting them. A little simpler and works well in my opinion, especially if the carbs were off the car to start with so you can accurately set the throttle plate gap.
So... about that frozen outlet ball check valve _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

yep there are 2 check balls, that one under the outlet and another under the threaded brass plug i
n the float chamber ,whip them both out and clean that passage ,when the pump is reassembled there should be a good strong flow from the outlet, when the top is replaced check output volume as per bentley ,too easy _________________ I like hammers. Lots of hammers. Hammers and me go way back.

Cool, I'll pull both of them and clean then out. I have a feeling the steel ball in the outlet may be rusty, which is why it probably is stuck. I'll find a fresh ball bearing to drop in there. Should be good to go after that. Thanks! _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295
