Time for a little update...
My dad got the engine together (for the most part)
(Well, I did rebuild the carburetor and fuel pump )
Here's a pic of the seat frame. Both seat frames were stripped to bare metal, primed and painted white. (sorry, no current pic of the frames)
Here's a before pic:
Yesterday I got all the angle Iron I need to build the body rotisserie I designed. Today I went out and bought a chop saw to cut it all up.
Progress has been relatively slow-going.
Mostly due to my grandmother being in the hospital for the past week, it's had my dad and my whole family stressed out.
Once I get the rotisserie built, hopefully that will give my dad some much needed lift in spirit and motivation.
My father did contact his friend in the bodywork / painting biz recently. He happens to have an opening next spring (the guy's usually booked solid for 2 years in advance). So... if we can get the body welded all back together by spring, we may be able to get it painted by then. Wishful thinking
Until next time... I've got some cutting and welding to do! _________________ '69 Bug,'71 Bus,'61 Bug ,'56 Bug, '66 Panel |

The Octagonal Volkswagen rotational tool of death (working title) is Complete!!!!!
Actually, it's been complete for about a week, but today the body got mounted to it. That is, after a morning of my father and I freezing our Cannolies off
^ there are some structural problems at the rear mounts (among many other things) that need to be tended to (hence the aditional support of the orange tie-down).
This is definitely going to make working on the body a whole lot easier.
On another totally related note, we got a good deal on a pair of floor pans I found here on The Samba. We picked them up this morning.
Not as beefy as the ones we've had our eyes on, but they'll do. _________________ '69 Bug,'71 Bus,'61 Bug ,'56 Bug, '66 Panel |

So it's officially spring, and all that schmooze.
No real progress was made on the bug over the winter, but now that it's nice enough to work in the driveway, we can get some stuff done.
After waching volume 7 of bugme video, my dad got real ambitious, and took the left heater channel out of the bug.
she's no cream puff.
We're now waiting on new channels, and we need to get the door jam lined up right again too.
The rotisserie saved my dad's back...
He got the firewall tacked in place, until we get the heater channels.
So that's It.
Slowly but surely, piece by piece, she's coming together.
The bug is kind of at the bottom of the list behind my bus and my dad's '67 ghia.
We hope to get the ghia out from it's hiding place so we can piece it together enough for a summer cruiser.
Note: Stinger just for yucks. _________________ '69 Bug,'71 Bus,'61 Bug ,'56 Bug, '66 Panel |

Well, my dad's been hard at work in the driveway in his spare time over the summer.
We ordered many of the repair panels needed a while ago, so that's kept him quite busy.
He's managed to replace :
-both rear body supports
-both cross members
-both quarter panels
-both heater channels
-both front inner fender pieces
don't mind the ugly patches
He's managed pretty well considering our welder is a piece of junk.
Here's a pic of the luggage area after my dad finished off a can of por-15 topcoat paint (just to keep it from rusting)
doesn't look half bad
After a little grinding, filler and primer, the rear quarter is looking pretty nice
That's the last of what's happening on the bug. I hope to get started on putting the chassis together soon. (he say's that's gonna be my job).
And just for fun, here's a pic of my dad's '67 ghia as it sits for the summer:
The paintjob is just temporary for the summer. This winter it's gonna get the proper treatment.
Someday I just may start a build thread for that thing... :/

It's still very much alive! It's been on the shelf for quite a while, after I got a '69 last fall and my dad acquired his '56 in the spring (which is borrowing the '61s 40 horse).
The body is still pretty much the same shape. The chassis, however, is coming along nicely. New floors were installed, then we covered the whole thing in herculiner. It came out wicked good, looks bullet proof. My dad got the beam mounted up front, and the tranny mounted out back. He's got most of the brake components installed now. We hope to have the chassis running by spring.
Seeing as how my dad's got his dream oval, we're pretty much going to be turning this bug into a driver, something that can be driven year round (if we can find a gas heater for a decent price). I'll try and get some new pics soon! _________________ '69 Bug,'71 Bus,'61 Bug ,'56 Bug, '66 Panel |

Excellent job you're doing. Very nice father/son team. It's a pleasure to see you're really saving those cars, and not just putting fancy wheels and a narrowed beam on beaten up cars. Congrats. Keep up the good work on all your projects. _________________ 1976 181/Thing (daily driver), 1967 fastback, 1973 squareback, 1964 microbus, 1967 Double Cab, 1969 westfalia (currently under resto), 1972 westfalia, 1978 westfalia, 1972 LM1C dune buggy, 1974 jean's bug, 1974 1303 (super beetle, currently under reassembly after new paint) + 2 semi wrecks 181 (1971 and 1972)... |

Sounds like my '69
We're probably not going to go back to the stock 40 horse. We'd really like to get a hi-power engine and make a sleeper, but until we come across a couple grand, we're probably going to slap together a dual port with the abundance of stock late parts in my garage. _________________ '69 Bug,'71 Bus,'61 Bug ,'56 Bug, '66 Panel |

Surely not. You can't compare your car :
to this :
There's narrowed beam and narrowed beam. Some put it for good reason, like you did, i.e fitting larger wheels without rubbing. And you didn't only put a narrowed beam. Someone who patches rust, changes taillights seals,...is definitely doing good to his car.
So, once again, congrats to you and your dad. _________________ 1976 181/Thing (daily driver), 1967 fastback, 1973 squareback, 1964 microbus, 1967 Double Cab, 1969 westfalia (currently under resto), 1972 westfalia, 1978 westfalia, 1972 LM1C dune buggy, 1974 jean's bug, 1974 1303 (super beetle, currently under reassembly after new paint) + 2 semi wrecks 181 (1971 and 1972)... |

Thanks man, the '69s no cream puff, but I guess she's more road worth than others . The pans are sparce... maybe in a few years I can get the body off that and do it up right.
Speaking of pans... here are some (older) pics of the '61s chassis.

Looking good man! What color is that? My dad is thinking of painting the '61 strato silver to match his '56. That color looks awfully similar (if not the same)
As promised, here are some updated pictures of the '61

Blimey! Nice work fellas. The old man dont mind a bit of graft does he?
Love the body roller. Is it something you came up with yourself or have you seen someone else do it before? A highly nickable idea regardless.
