Ha ha ha, that's HILARIOUS. Thomas was driving the car in that autocross (fast time) and did you see at the end of that thread that 914 broke an axle at Bugorama? Know who was driving when that happened? One guess. Just one.

Haha I guess I've been called worse! It's pretty funny that you posted that video right now, right after I posted pictures of my broken bug.
That's my dad's WRX powered 914. I broke that axle in the 914, on slicks at the drag strip, and I broke the transmission case on it as well. BUT... In all fairness I also drive these little cars faster than anyone who has ever co-driven them with me. And also faster than a LOT of faster cars as well. So that's got that's got to be worth something! _________________ -Thomas

Jesus you just really want to be that one guy who manages to break everything that nobody else has a problem with, don't you? Was it just all the camber that did it in or what? Luckily it wasn't at speed or anything! |
Hahaha. I really don't want to be that guy!
I don't think it was the extra camber, because the ballpoint was a little bit loose already. And the driveway provided the final blow. I knew it needed replacing, and I even have a full set of ball joints and tie rods in the garage already. I just didn't think it was quite that bad. Lesson learned. _________________ -Thomas

Well eventually everything will be new, and then when it breaks you can just upgrade it.... But seriously, try to keep it alive for a little longer!! It is good that you are still keeping at it though, even when it tests your patience. _________________ 62 Rag - a little crusty |

Breaking things isn't necessarily a bad thing, it means you're taking the assembly to its limits, which is where the thrills are and where weak links show up. So fix what breaks, make it stronger, and keep going. The only time it's bad is when you break the same thing over and over, but that just means it needs some special attention. On the other hand the guys who NEVER break anything aren't ever getting anywhere near the limits either. That's OK too, but not nearly as much fun. |

I had registered for an autocross this coming weekend, but for reasons beyond my control, I just had to back out. Which SUCKS, because it was going to be a really good one!! I registered my car in the OSP (open street prepared) class, which means that basically any modification is allowed. I've sort of forced myself into that class, with the engine and brakes.
What I wanted to point out are the cars I would have been up against:
Quote: |
Open Street Prepared 5 entries:
# Name Year Make.
5 Jeff X Factory Five Cobra
12. Thomas 1958. Volkswagen Beetle
74. james 1965 Factory Fivei Cobra
174. Dan 1965 Factory Five Cobra
527 Dan 2006 Chevrolet Corvette
|
I would have LOVED a chance to take down a Cobra or a Corvette! My god, can you imagine the humiliation I might have provided?!? I can't wait for the day that I get another chance. _________________ -Thomas

Wow! Thank you, that is very kind. Thanks for posting!
I will take photos of the oil lines for you this weekend. My engine is a phase 2, with slightly higher compression than the phase 1 engines. But I also have reground camshafts, which may be helping the engine survive at boost. Running on Ethanol E85 is definitely helping it stay together. Right now, I hit around 12psi of boost at redline. It should only be 6 or so, but I am getting some serious boost creep due to a restriction at the wastegate. We did tune the engine up to 15psi or so, just to be safe. An MegaSquirt is set up to kill the engine if it hits 13psi.
I can't guarantee that it will last forever at 12psi. But I will say that it's a lot of fun!! _________________ -Thomas

I broke another axle. Saw a friend, did a burnout in 1st, and got a little wheel hop so i lifted, but it was too late. POP!
I knew exactly what happened immediately, but thanks to the welded differential, I just kept driving, all the way home. Interestingly, the steering is so much lighter with an open dff. Much tighter turning radius too.
Autozone is starting to ask questions when I order replacement warranty axles, but they still complied. I wonder how much longer they'll let me get away with it? _________________ -Thomas

When they do, just switch stores, will probably have to go to CarQuest, Advance etc. I had the same situation come up with a Honda I had once, it was swapped with more power, lowered etc. They kept replacing them but I was only going through 2-3 a year _________________ I have a German look bug, it was built in Germany and looks like it.
