PostPosted: Mon Mar 24, 2014 5:31 pm    Post subject: Generator Replace Reply with quote

This Morning / Afternoon May Be A New Record For Myself !

Removed and Replaced Super Beetle Generator in 4 hours - Outdoor environment 32 - 44 degree F. Taking short breaks as well.

One Bad Note : I found a hairline crack in the FAN assembly itself where
it is attached to the Generator Rear Bolt. I wanted to JB Weld; but didn't
since I needed it on the road this afternoon.
JB Weld or Replace FAN soon !

Re-connected the retard port of my DVDA to the carb, timed it to 0* TDC at idle, all hoses connected. Dwell reads close to 48*. Running really well...let's see how long the points last...

yesterday i put on a new front drum. the old one had a lug bolt hole stripped out. it went smooth ,except when i bought the part, they sold me a super beetle drum, took me a few to figure it out , with vw on jack and wheel off, found a ride to exchange the part. got the right one, took all of 20 minutes to install and adjust my front brakes. i just bought new front fenders and turn signals and plan to install as soon as the rain lets up.

I put in a new carpet kit and a new stick shift. After I finished I realized I didn't put the little plastic thing on the bottom of the shifter. I also removed the crappy bass tube and speaker that was just sitiing in the rear compartment and put in a deck lid with 2 new speakers in. I got the deck lid from The Buggy House, it's a lot nicer than the on in the cal bug catalog and fit perfect. It wraps around and is a nice black vinyl instead of carpet.

Has anyone rebuilt the seats in a super? I want to do that next but I am not sure if I can do it proper like. Thanks!

Been loosing a little power and wants to die after driving on the freeway for a while, so took out points and with 400 grit sandpaper. I cleaned off the point surface, re-gapped, checked timing, adjusted idle, went for another cruise. Woowho!! Powers back. Gotta go.....time to cruise....

Today I relocated my fuel filter from the engine bay to over the rear axle.

Safety first, right?

Replaced my last dry rotten tire today, finally giving me 4 tires under 5k miles, and no dry rot. It's funny how new rubber can turn a turd into a smooth riding automobile...

Yeah, did. Was one of the first things I did- white- bright white. After all the rest of the work, - not so bright white.
As far as process, dismantled the seat-backs for the seat-bottoms. Used new foam. Can't recall what I used between the foam and springs. But had to fix a few of the seat.
Used the hog ring set from jbugs - I believe it was a TMI kit.
Reassembled. As I recall getting the bolts to realign was a pain in the butt, but I did get it done, sooo.
It's been 7? 10? Years? And still getting lots of compliments on it.
Good luck

OH and cleaned out my trunk. Relocated my spare to my roofrack. Alotted a tool bag with spare parts, a jack, a jack stand and an extra v-belt to the tire well. Tomorrow to fabricate a 2L bottle to hold air for my wiper fluid! Sorry for double posting but it was a busy day.

Rolled the car out of the garage for the first time this season.

Cranked it till the oil pressure light went out and had fuel pressure. Gave the pedal 2 kicks and it fired right up. Roll it out of the garage and gave it a few minutes and took my foot off and it came to a nice smooth idle.

Wish my Civic started as nice after it sat for a week compared to 4 months for the VW.
