Adjusted the valves on my 70. Most were ok. One was a little loose at about .008 and was set to .005 last time on the intake valve.

my bug sat for over 10 years without being started. i had to completely rebuild the engine. today was the first day that i started it up and it ran (not well until i adjusted the valves and set the timing) continuously. very proud of myself and wanted to thank the samba for all the guides to help me rebuild an engine since i have never cone it before

heres the video of it running for the first time, the sound is weird because i had my finger over the microphone

Just installed this into my 73 sb. Took 2 months and had to send carbs back two times, they leaking gas all the time into the pistons.

Long block

Today I wanted to change the trailing arms on my 71 super. I had 2 that are in really great shape. I took one bearing out and couldn't budge the other for quite awhile. Forgot the snap ring under the seal. Removed the ring and just about fell out on it's own. Have to pay a little more attention to what I'm doing. Laughing Jeff

Check out this album i made this morning of my bug . I was inspired by a 2013 Maseratti Turismo Blue Oceano with Couio interior.

Ripped out the sway bar, and the right side strut assy. I disaseemblied the assy, and cleaned up and painted springs and bits. I just need to separate the strut from the drum, to put my lowered strut on.

Last weekend I replaced the steering box and steering damper in my 69. Car was shimmying on the road when I hit bumps, and the wheel was not turning smoothly and had already been adjusted. Awesome improvement for about $150 total.

Painted the different suspension bits, reinstalled the sway bar with poly eurathane bushings, cut the brake and speedo tab off of the original strut housing and welded on my new CIP lowered housing. Assembled right side strut assy and reinstalled on the car. Bled the brakes a little - quite a pain by yourself.

I just need to do a final bleed on the brakes and install the tires.

Installed a rebuilt 205T distributor that I got from Tasb, here on The Samba. I replaced a 009 knock off and I am very pleased with how much smoother my car accelerates. As usual, the closer I get this engine back to stock, the better it runs.

New brake light switches, German from Airhead. Lost brake lights recently, did all diagnostics, switches were culprit.
Old switches had VW/Audi markings, unknown vintage, I guess they just wore out...
Lights work now!

first oil change ever since i started up the rebuilt engine 2 weeks ago. i havent ran it very much, maybe 5 minutes here and there. but today i let the engine idle for about 30 minutes with a couple light revs, shut it off and drained it. oil went in clear and came out pretty close to black (and luckily with no smell of gasoline). no metal particles in the oil with the exception of some very tiny aluminum shavings and very tiny globs of lithium grease (tom wilsons book for all the people who want to jump on my case about this one). and the only reason i found these tiny shavings and globs was i put a paper towel over the oil drain pan opening so it could catch the really tiny stuff. over all im pretty proud of my self for attempting my first rebuild and not messing anything up

New front brake shoes
Adjusted and bled all brakes
Installed replacement hood (after fender bender) - Still need to tweak the hood latch
New wiper blades
Peeled off the old dash cap in prep for a new one
Re-installed horn button
Fixed headlight bucket
Replaced leaky fuel hoe from filler to tank
Aired up all the tires, including spare
and vacuumed the interior.
Good times.

I ordered a new accelerator cable, carb rebuild kit, pushrod tubes, and oil cooler seals. Plus I found some new rear wheels.

Working on the bug little by little Shocked

Got all my break lines replaced, wheel cylinder, shoes, master, rubber lines and finally was able to adjust them and properly tune the break system; it stops now.

Started to work no the exhaust system and decided to use an old EMPI muffler I had instead of using the huge Flowmaster just because I want to drop the back end at least 1 click to lower the car even more.

Here's the progress:

My new iPhone is taking too long, this pictures looks horrible!

That's it for today, I'll be working on it this week and replace all the gasket as well. Razz

I waxed and polish my 72s original paint, she's pretty now and took a needle and thread and repaired the crack on the seams of her drivers seat (original interior). Then polished the chrome and buffed her hella taillights. Then took her to a car show.

Got the body off the pan and started cutting out the rotten passenger side heater channel.
