Just got my car back from Tim (401 Restos ) and started the reassembly. New rubber in rear engine compartment. Rubber in front hood. Steering box, rebuilding speedometer before it goes in. Dash, and started plumbing under hood. I'm going to do as much as I can before I put it back on the chassis. Can't get around inside very well with 2 knee replacements. I am making progress but I have a long way to go. Jeff

It's cold and dark in Alaska this time of year. Recently, I dropped a SVDA dizzy in my 1641 DP with 34 pict 3 and it ran a lot better than with the 009. Took it out around the block and discovered I had no lights at all in the back. 4:00 pitch dark so I had to scoot back home quickly. My next task is to find where the power has gone off to back there.

Removed the dashboard and interior A/C unit. Apparently it was an original unit (dealer installed) as it has a made by VW of America sticker and made in USA.

Also removed the headliner and found that the rear seal on my sunroof had come dislodged from the mount. Shoved it back in and bent the bracket up slightly to keep pressure on it.

Lastly I checked all tie rods (all need replacement) but reconnected the steering box and shaft so I cam move it around again.

Next up are control arm bushings and door seals when they get delivered.

Removed running boards yesterday on my '71 Super convertible and only broke off 1 bolt! I'm going to get it stripped down this winter and begin sanding. Hopefully along the way I'll get inspired on what I want the "after" to look like. I planned to just drive it for a few years before tearing into the body, but I can't handle having it just sit in the garage for the winter.

Its currently a dark blue (similar to an original Sapphire Blue), on top of red, on top of white (I guess Kansas Beige).

Replaced the rear rubber sunroof seal and posted the pics for the next person to hopefully have for future reference.

Hopefully the rain will now stay on the outside of my interior now that the seal is on and I cleaned out all of the drain lines.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 04, 2015 9:30 pm    Post subject: breather box Reply with quote

installed a breather box from empty, new 1915cc engine creating too much crank case pressure and relieving itself all over the engine.
tools:
3/4" step drill, primer paint, and self tapping metal screws.
Drilled into both valve covers and under engine metal above each with step drill. ran the hoses unto box and attached to the front of the fan housing. took all about 25 minutes.
no more oil spraying.

Put in my windshield wiper motor today. Just a thought for everyone doing a full resto. Put your motor in first, before anything else . Almost impossible if you don't. Jeff

Replaced the speedometer gels and cleaned 44 years of grit out of the speedometer. Cleaning the inside of the glass alone made it look amazing.

Also installed a wiper delay module from Revolution Electronics and replaced my blinker switch.
