Today I installed an aftermarket EMPI shifter on my new to me 1973 Super Beetle...This shifter has a slight bend in the handle, a round black knob and the finger ring used to engage reverse while pulling up with your index finger...I was amazed at how tight it feels while shifting when compared to the rubbery feeling of the stock shifter....it has a positive stop at the end of every throw and it just transforms the driving experience...Fifty bucks and ten minutes installation?...priceless ! Very Happy

Took advantage of a "break" in the winter weather - geez, i think it hit 38* today! - to change the oil and filter. Switched to QS Defy 5w/30 from 10w/30. Also used a bucket of hot water and car wash sponge to get all of the dried up road salt off the body.

Bought a bunch of parts to rebuild the front end on my 74 super, and try to kill the "shimmys". Also a few other needed parts.

I got a bushing set for the control arms, new tie rods, ball joints, steering damper with bushings, camber bolts, and wheel bearings. Also picked up a svda distributer to replace the 009, new speedo cable, fuel gauge sender, battery box, stereo and speakers, new antenna, brake light switches, and a few oil strainer gaskets.

So far I this evening I was able to pull off the control arms, sway bar, tie rods, and steering damper.

Ball joints are definitely shot. Still not sure how the heck I'm going to get them out of the control arms and get the new ones in...

I messed up a new steering damper bushing. It went in a little crooked. Hopefully I can either pop it into place still or remove it and put a new one in.

Replaced ignition lock, door handles, and engine lid lock on my '74 super beetle. Now everything works with the same key.

Replaced all fuel and vapor return lines front to back. Tank quit venting. Holding pressure. Clogged up at metal tubing along running board. W-D 40 and lock wire cleared it. Been replacing rubber parts trying to keep every thing fresh. Low mileage 72' super vert I have had for a year now. Had the trans reworked at Az Transaxle. 034 distributor that was setup for a t-4 engine that I ran in my bus that I installed seems to be a good match for the solex 30/31 that came on the engine. Not sure, but I'm thinking the bug is getting double the gas mileage that the bus gets. Its a pleasure driving it.

re-wired the rear fog light that was added in germany upon import of my mexi. now it grounds on the right tail light connector's post inside the engine compartment. Also, replaced the alarm horn mount hex screw with a stainless one.

Glad I'm not the only one to do this lol. My bus once died on the freeway... took me a while to realize the rod had worked its way out thus the fuel stopped pumping. Had a perfect size bolt, nut, and washer laying around in the tool box.

10 minutes later I was on my way. That was a year ago, it's still like that. Very Happy

Replaced the front and rear transmission mounts. Surprised about the front as it was still in pretty good condition. Reads had fully disintegrated.

Also on Friday night I finally got all of my front end rebuild complete. New tie rods, ball joints, control arm and sway bar bushings, steering damper and bushings, and new adjustable struts and new cartridges.

Tomorrow it is on to finishing the transmission updates (rebuild the shaft and new throw out bearing). Take the heads off the engine to put in the deflector tin that I missed (damn it) then try to get some help to finally put the engine in!

I've had the car now for five years so simply getting it into o e price will be a huge milestone. Just a few more small steps before I can finish up all of the body/wiring/power train work before thinking about trying to start it!

Took advantage of the first sunny day above freezing in over a month to start her up and let her run in the garage.

Felt great!

PostPosted: Fri Mar 13, 2015 3:39 pm    Post subject: what i did to my bug todayy.. Reply with quote

Today Friday 13 March was a kinda lucky day for me as I enjoyed using my 1972 Standard 1200 Marina Blue,daily-driver bug for a fundraising video shoot. This video shoot will be edited next week, the idea is to raise money for the local Galway Fringe Festival, here on the beautiful West Coast of Ireland.

The video shows my bug failing to start(pretend)and then as I sit there looking dissappointed, along come some helpful passer-bys who start to push the bug along and so the camera pans to show happy-faces all-round as the bug drives off.The video will then have some text and a voice-over added to say that to get the festival off to a good start we need a helping hand to fund it.The sun was shing all day,a rare event in this time of year in Ireland with stunning light conditions,to make even my rusty bug shine. The car performed well despite the fact that my left-side door is rotten and fit to fall-off.Hope I can get a good second-hand replacement soon!
The completed video will soon be posted on the Galway Fringe Festival website galwayfringe.ie,on the fundit.ie page and facebook too over the next couple of weeks. After all that hammy acting I drove 20 miles to visit my old lady, dont forget guys that Mothers Day is coming up on Sunday!
