Wikipedia wrote:
The United States instituted a 25% tariff on pickup trucks in the 1960s with what is known as the "chicken tax". The tax originated when West Germany placed a tariff on U.S. frozen chicken. The United States retaliated with a tariff on four items that included trucks, as Volkswagen was exporting the Volkswagen Type 2 in pickup form

Quote:
Interesting tidbit - the chicken tax was called that because Germany was heavily taxing imported chicken from the US.
So, a corresponding tax was imposed on cars (at 2.5%) and trucks (at 25%) from foreign countries (except for NAFTA countries, later on.) The 25% truck tax was created specifically to force VW out of the US truck market. (They had the Transporter-based pickups.)

IIRC, VW got around it by bolting a wooden bench in the bed.

Also, the Japanese manufacturers initially got around it by shipping the trucks to the US without the bed attached, and shipping the beds separately. Then, they bolted the bed to the truck at the port. Voila, final assembly in the US, chicken tax avoided.

VW ALWAYS marketed the Type2 bus as a "stationwagon" people mover not a commercial vehicle.

Me too. Very Happy

Yes, I'm pretty happy about this score. The dropgates are in pretty good shape an only the rockerpanels need some work. The floors and frames are very well protected with some tar or something.

Just need an engine for it.

Oddly, most of those pickups sold in Europe had the type 1 engine. I think they had type 4's in australia, though.
With high gas prices in Europe, the type 1 engine would be a better choice for a business.
Not like in the US, where a big honkin truck with an 8 liter engine is just big enough, unless you are towing, then you need a diesel!

So true. In -72 the 1700cc Type-4 became an option, but most were sold with the T-1's

When I was to the garage last time I forgot to check the colour code on the M-plate...

Could it be Niagara blue?

Looks like Neptune blue to me. Niagara blue is much lighter and not a commercial color.

Also bought a pair of horseshoes... Wink

I took the heads off the engine sometime in November and cleaned it up some. Then reassembled it again.

Started fitting WBX Digijet fuel injection on it.
Here you see the Wasserboxer plenum mounted and the manifolds adjusted so they line up with the larger plenum.
