Jimmy 111, my brother's 2004 BMW motorcycle is a four-stroke flat twin, air-cooled with oil cooled exhaust ports, installed longitudinally,
4 valves per cylinder, two overhead
camshafts, electronic fuel injection.

Not inline or water-cooled.

Would something like this have real world benefits (such as increased fuel efficiency, etc), or is this a "for the hell of it" type of thing?

that kind of looks like a motoguzzi motor??

i think it would be more interesting to make a vw engine run on only two cylinders.

Photo please. The 4 cylinder was not a boxer motor. it was a inline 4 laying down. Ok you got me, it was oil cooled. but not aircooled. Very Happy

It's a Moto Guzzi motor as installed in a Blackjack Zero kit car. Probably requires the purchase of the whole car but proves it can be done. On the kit car it's facing forward into the airstream, so there's no problems with cooling like there would be with it installed on a VW.
My photobucket is now set to private, nothing you can see there anyways that I haven't already posted in the abortions thread but thanks for looking.

Think I might have found a solution to the cooling problem:

Kohler engines come with cooling tins and a flywheel fan already installed. The only problem is, top speed is 10MPH in 4th gear.

Looking at that motorcycle pic hard to tell if VW or stock. But to clear up a few things:
1. Yes there have been several motorcycle powered by vw that look just like one in picture.
2. BMW did in fact use air cooled opposed boxer type engines in countless bikes that were same basic layout as vw.

I can't really confirm that's a VW engine since all you can see is the valve cover but this is what the R60 engine looks like. Check out the driveshaft, I love this bike.

I have had several BMW motorcycles over the years and consequently attended many BMW rallys. At one time it was quite common to install a ACVW engine in the bike in place of the BMW boxer twin. I have seen many of them make cross country trips with no issues.
I got rid of my Beemer boxer because I couldn't stand the heat on my feet, I can't imagine how hot 4 cylinders with more CC's can get on your feet.

From the article:
Along for the ride was a terrific looking Volkswagen-powered BMW, the creation of Bob Lester, of Fort Lauderdale.
It came by its patina honestly: he built it in 1977, mostly by looking at four other VW-BMW conversions in town at the time. His goal was to keep the motorcycle as stock as possible, resulting in a lot of double-takes from viewers. It really did resemble the classic BMW powered BMW on the ride.
It's no problem keeping the VW motor cool, Lester told me, because the motor doesn't build up much heat. It came from a VW bus. It's barely working to move the motorcycle.

Not to dredge up a dead post, but here's the info on the black BMW with VW engine swap...

http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/BMW-VW/index.htm

Same pictures as the original post. The VW engine into BMW frame is a 'common' old timer swap...

FWIW -

There was a article in a vintage bike mag about a 356 Porsche engined one,and the batteries you have to carry (to start it) and the motor itself makes it a pig to drive, brake don't work well with the extra weight and the guy mentioned "counter steering" when having to make a turn! Said his legs get roasted since you got 4 cylinders of heat hitting your legs!
Here is a pic of my Bimmer bike, the way they were meant to be. I just love my boxer motors Cool

You could allways put the motor from a "Boss Hoss" in your Bug. I have seen a few of them done, there about 5700 cc's. Shocked

There's probably more running on 2 cylinders than you think.

Smile Smile Someone mentioned a 2 cyl VW engine possibility.

As a VW shop owner back in 1979 I had many old parts laying in the scrap pile waiting for disposal. On a sat afternoon got the idea of the 2 cyl engine.

Welded up a couple crank journals, used rods, used bearings, two used pistons/cyls, two junk SP heads, warped engine case...assembled with new gskts from broken gskt sets. Used #1 and #3 on the case.

Sheet metal, SP intake manifold, old clutch and pressure plate and installed the engine into a 70 T1 bug.

Drove it down the fwy at 35 mph. Slow getting there due to the car weight but the combination might have worked in a small trike etc,

Never did try anything else over the yrs.

It isa VW engine in a BMW bike. there was a yahoo group a few years ago, but I cannot find it now. This guy has done the conversion and can probably provide more info. To the best of my memory the frame was modified to account for the increased length of the VW engine.
http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/BMW-VW/index.htm
An adapter was used to keep the original BMW trans.
They ended up being a wider than the original bike because of the engine, but proved more reliable.

I would still like to find an adapter for a v2 to vw trans other than blackjack or Z cars.
