most people ditched the step because of ground clearance issues.

Tell that to those of us with a propane tank mounted under our campers.
There's still lots of room under the tank @ stock height.

That really bums me to hear; I had planned on getting the sidestep repro one day when I could but if that's so, why bother? Does anybody else have an opinion on the repro?

I just picked up a used one this past week. I love it. It's mostly for looks and not much help for adults. However, my 3 yr old couldn't be any happier about. She uses it every time she gets in and out. Keep 'em shiny!

I got mine back in the 80's for $10 at a VW garage. They really strenghten up sliding door area. Make sure your jack points are square before you slide it in. There really are any clearance problems driving with it on the bus. I got my roof rack for $25 at same place. It was made in Spain. Came off a South American Panel that found it's way to New Orleans.

Though short-legged, I don't have a problem stepping up into the bus, but I find the side step makes it easier. The best use, IMHO, is when I'm sitting in the doorway, morning coffee in hand, slowly waking up, surveying the world, with my feet propped on the step. It's more comfortable.

Looks like a Gibbes side step:

It's not normally welded in place, there is a tab on one side that holds it into the jack point.

More stuff in this Gibbes search in the Gallery

More info:
It's a bit confusing by the name - "Gibbes Machinery Company" but that is actually a VW dealership, one of the largest at the time in that area. They made a few different accessories.

Dealer page on the site:

Maybe when it stops flooding here, I will roll the bus out and take better photos.
