Did you spray that panel with the can spray as well, it looks really good. Who made the paint in the aerosal for you?

The panel where the bondo was? Yea I spray painted that too. I blended it with the can the best I could and you honestly can't even tell. I sprayed a little clear over it too and buffed it by hand to make it match. Look at the pictures of the passenger side of the car, you can hardly notice.

A local automotive paint store in CT called Coatings International made the match and put it in the cans for me with a small amount of clear mixed into it, so it had a little shine to it when it dried. The color is a little off, but I don't care. Thanks for the kind words everyone! Very Happy

well this past weekend I decided to dive into fixing my uneven rear end. I knew the torsions bar splines were screwed up from the previous owner b/c the wheel/fender gap was about 2" off on either side. So while I was fixing the spline problem I decided to change the bushings too, b/c I just assumed they were shot.

New bushings in. and like Shano63 suggested, buying longer cover plate bolts to get the others started was a lot easier, thanks.

When I had the drum off I noticed I had some grease drippings in the brake, so I changed both rear axle seals.

Sitting flat...not slammed obviously, but it's as low as the "low side" when it was uneven. If I were to do it over again, I would've lowered it a little more, but I don't want to rip it apart again Mad I have no idea how many splines I'm down, but I set the spring plates equal at 14 degrees.

I know it's a crappy picture but I also finally put my sway-a-way camber compensator on I bought months ago. I had to trim a lotttt off the urethane bushing axle cups, but it's b/c the z-bar was in the way.

Great job Matt, I was wondering if you got it done. I'm glad you lowered the other side, can't wait to see it. Cool

Hey I just want to say that Matt is a huge inspiration for me

My Beetle is in great shape overall, but I do want to get that underside chassis/pans/etc to look MINT and I will be following the steps described in his thread. I am new to the sceme, but just today, I got my floor jack, stands, grinder (!) and brush wheel... Also compiling a shopping list of products Matt used.

First time I see QUICK ROOF used like that - is this something folks recommend? Sure looks nice and insulated Smile

I like the comment somewhere above: "no bolt left unturned" ... Now THAT is my kind of mission statement Smile

Thank you!

Manuel

Has your beetle been lowered in the front or does it have that stance just from the smaller tires in front?

I have an adjustable beam that's all the way down. The bottom of the beam sits about 4" off the ground. but the smaller tires definitely helped bring the front down a little too. Thanks for the kind words everyone! Very Happy

This is an updated picture of the new stance. It's got a slight rake to it, the front of the running board is 2" lower than the back of it.

So what's up with the four lugs? I thought '67 were five lugs. Why would the PO want to change it? (I'm trying to figure this out b/c the dumb PO changed my '67 to four lug also)

I'm pretty sure mine were changed to four lug b/c the previous owner put ghia disc brakes on teh front and they were 4 lug...so he had to make the rears match. I want to switch to wide 5 discs over the winter and get matching rears. and I've been in touch with kcw about a narrowed adjustable beam, so hopefully that'll happen too Very Happy

Sound deadening tool I made from an old rollerblade wheel to stick the stuff in the nooks and crannies. It worked awesome Very Happy

I really really like this... I have a few questions Smile

Is Quick Roof something people usually put on their car this way? Any additional details about this product, and how you used it, perhaps gotchas, things to watch for?

Also do replacement carpets/mats cover all that shiny surface well (and/or can it be painted)?

Thank you Smile

People usually put stuff called Dynamat down. It's used by a lot of car restoration guys and sound system installers to keep the car insulated and the road noise down. Quick Roof is basically the same thing just wayyy more affordable. You can watch this video from youtube about it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7eIF4cgFx4

There's really no tricks or surprises. Just make sure you stick it where you want it, b/c it's really hard to peel back up once it's stuck. I heated up the Quick Roof and the area where I was sticking it when I was installing it. this way it makes the roll pliable and easy to work with. Just be careful not to cut yourself the foil edges can be sharp.

I'm sure you can paint it, but I don't think it's necessary b/c the carpeting covers everything. Hope that helps.

That helped a lot - I love Chris Vallone's videos!

Would one stick that on the floor pans too? Chris mentions that he is going to use it in the doors under the panels.

Thanks

yea you can put it on the floors if you want. But if you want to do it the original way you can buy the tarboard like how it came from the factory.

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113863740
If you want to put stuff on the floor, I'd just use the Quick Roof in stead of buying that.

Since your blinkers are not on top of the fenders, are those little orange bulbs in your headlight assembly your blinkers?
