I spent a week at Maui in Jan. of '06. The weather was beautiful. The whale watching tour was cool but it did seem like they cared more about money. I saw more whales from the balcony at the resort we stayed at. I don't suggest the helicopter tour. We crash landed 7 minutes into our 1 hour tour. I still haven't got my money back |

If you walked away from that with no lingering injuries, I'd call it even. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

Your story validates my decision to cancel our helicopter trip on our Maui trip last April. Booked it on line, when we got out to the heliports there was so much vog we were hesitant, the employees assured us that we would see plenty of the Island. But remember the Flight regs stipulate the aircraft maintain a large distance from the groung , like 1800 ft? As we were an hour early we watched videos from the days earlier flights, you couldnt see jack! Also watched some take offs and landings and they didnt inspire confidence. We rescheduled for the next day and then cancelled. Spent an extra day snorkeling, much happier with that, wifes shark encounter included. |

Lawyers are working on that right now. Still not sure what the cause of it was. |

Helicopters don't just go down, there are reasons,Especially a Bell Jet ranger like this, These are one of the best around. Low Fuel, Bad Pilot, Mechanical issues, All these would be "someones fault", Mother nature on the other hand can't really be held to blame but unless you were flying into a hurricane, (which the helicopter wouldn't be up in the first place) It wouldn't contribute to the fact of a helicopter going down! |

Actually, the aircraft was an Euorcopter EC130. NTSB is checking into the Fadec system which is the fuel control system. The weather wasn't the best that day and I wonder if that has something to do with it. There still is no conclusion though. |

Only been to Kona on the big island, but had a blast. It didn't seem very touristy at all. It felt more like a Southern California beach town except for Hilo. When you get there grab a free "101 things to do" magazines. Lots of things to do in there for free and paid stuff. I shot the flume, toured the observatories, saw giant manta rays, swam with turtles, fed fish, Kaiyaked, watched spinner dolphins from the condo, saw wonderful sunsets, saw dancers, walked on white, black and green sand beaches, saw the volcanoes, smelled the sulfur, felt the steam, saw a huge water fall. The kids just wanted to go to Wallmart and swim in the pool, , but I dragged their asses all over that island. _________________ Prosit!

I heard that any island that ends in eee is the place to go
Maui -- waterfalls, Hana, O'heo, Kahakuloa, Haleakala
Kauai -- Waimea Canyon,
Molokini --whale watching, diving, turtles, dolphins...
I love Maui ! I enjoy Kihei... the beaches are very nice.. Kamaole beach in Kihei has great sunsets... good snorkelling , swimming , good facilities.. and no crowds . We have been there 3 times in early Dec tho.
Have fun ! Hang Loose!
the blue book helped us meet a lot of folks..

If there was no fatalities, the pilot did a good job initiating the autorotation as soon as he aknowledged the malfunction of the aircraft. That is why there is minimum altitiudes set when flying civilians around. I'm glad you are here to write about it and that a lawyer is looking into the actual cause to recover damages for you and hopefully the findings can prevent another incident like this if it can be prevented. Good luck. _________________ 67 Ghia coupe, Retired military.

Agreed. I saw some stats showing the amount of helicopter accidents in Hawaii since '95. Scary shit especially considering the percentage of those that resulted in death. I give my pilot MAJOR props for saving all of our lives. |

Yeah, that is unfortunate. When I lived in Hawaii, one of my best friends was saved by a helicopter pilot. My buddy was stranded on a high waterfall for days and by chance a pilot on a tourist sightseeing tour spoted him. It was a miracle. If the pilot wasn't trying to get the tourist a good shot of the falls, he would of missed him. If you look at the amount of flights to accident ratio, it is not too bad, but unfortunatly too often the mishaps are fatal. [/quote] _________________ 67 Ghia coupe, Retired military.

We rented a Vanagon camper and toured the Big Island.....loved it. It doesn't have as many beaches but there are a couple good ones, great places to snorkel on the Kona side.
Plus you the active volcanos which is awesome - plan to spend atleast one night there. _________________ Been on the samba so long I remember petting that dog to see VWs, WYHI, and green bug girl.
