I have left over 914 steering rack. How big of a pain would this be to put in my 74 bug??

I have often thought of performing the same change that you are thinking about.

If I remember correctly, the bottom of the gas tank is in the way unless you offset it towards the driver's side. But that would screw up the geometry. But them I was thnking of mouning the rack up close to the fire wall, similar to how it is in a 914. Perhaps placing it closer to the beam would solve the conflict. I never really got too deep into it.

Why have a car that several million other people have?

The task at hand:
A R&P system would complicate things, that is the main reason I have not done it. Just on a cursury level, the area where there steering wheel assembly would bolt to would need reinforcing, then there is the routing and custom fabricating of the steering column (u-joints, rods, etc.), then the fabricating of a mounting system for the rack itself......

You can buy them anywhere, it's called a steel drum, they're cheap too.

A huge benefit is the increased length of the left tie rod. This reduces bump steer significantly.

That should not be had to reproduce (famous last words) or create. They are just using one end of the rack.

Looks like Super Beetle tie rods.

Interesting.

It sort of looks like a Pinto/Mustang II rack with the driver side cut down.

Might it be possible to adapt the rack from a '75-'79 Super Beetle?

Forget the Super Beetle rack, it won't work.
The little arms on the spindles of a Super are ahead of the axle centerline, not behind. A Super rack would make the wheels steer the wrong direction when you turn the steering wheel.
