This is on the inside of my 1971's rear window, the texture of the glass is smoother for the logo area. My guess is there used to be a sticker there for many years, as I recall finding remnants of one in the luggage tray area. It's definitely not any sort of sandblast etching or anything. When the bug is clean you can barely tell it's there.
