I read The Samba, why would I want to read that rag? |
exactly.
there is nothing in that mag that appeals to me. I can see where a noob to the scene would like it to drool over and look at the 92 pages of advertisements making a list of things they want for their cool project in the garage.
they should just send it out as a catolog instead. _________________ OGJHC

i would read it more often if it had something worth reading in it. its the same ad's every month with 3 or 4 vw's and a shitty 2 to 10 paragraphs about the car and bug mail and tech talk have gotten lame over the years. the last copy i bought the bug mail's best advice they could give to a person was to go to the samba and ask his question.
come on guys over at hot vw's step up your game. give us something worth spending our $4.99 on. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

I bought my first issue back in aug of 1983, which I still have. I have not thrown out one issue. I have some gaps but have been saving them from 1984. I still subscribe to this day and love the mag. _________________ 63 T1 Ragtop Gulf Blue

I still get it, but I have it all the way back to when it was quarterly. It's more of a "collection" thing than an "enjoy reading it" thing.
I wouldn't mind the mag so much if they did like "Minitruckin" and showed more of the sub culture. I mean, nice clean cars are a must in a car mag, but what about something patina'd up, slammed and tucking big wheels (my style) or build articles other than how to change a fucking master cylinder. And if I see pics of another blue hair sitting in a lawn chair in front of cheezed-up beetle with color matched home-made trailer covered with stuffed animals at a car show, I may just stop "collecting". |
Second row up from the bottom, far left, the silver car being chased by the Police New Beetle..
Damn, I seem to know that silver car from somewhere.... _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

The cars in that mag are too polished and well finished for my taste. Yes, some do stand out but most features are like MadLibs...
" I found it ________ and it was in really bad shape but I threw _____ dollars at it and thanks to my friends/family/credit card it is now glossy enough to be seen from the moon. My Fuchs are ____ wide. The motor is 21____ CC (or the original NOS 12 HP barn find with OG oil still in the crankcase)."
Like another poster mentioned, some vws with real character and patina would be nice. They recently said that was not going to happen anytime soon... I can see how an unsafely rusted about to fold like a taco car shouldn't be glorified but some of the features should be "survivor" cars and "drivers". I would also like to see more real D.I.Y. project cars that were completed by the owner and not contracted out.
If I wanted to be surrounded by flashy overpriced cars, I would have joined the local Ford/Chevy/Mopar club and rolled a Mustang/Camaro/Cuda. I like the soul of an old car to be visible... _________________ " ... he walked the pavement of the city- a beggar and a king. Has it been otherwise with any man?" WOLFE

I agree.... lets see real people building their own cars..... I get tired of the same folks blowing cash and dropping the most expensive names in the industry...Yet they do not even turn a bolt. all hired out. Once in a while is ok to see something unique but after seeing the same rich douchebags featured time after time it gets old.
I think the mag would be better if it wasn't an advertising whore. I know you need ads to help pay for things but to push crap in the "feature" article makes you a biased infomercial. Especially if the parts in question fail..... how about a regular test feature that puts these parts to the test in real world conditions by third parties that have no interest in the results good or bad.... Wow those lifters fail with as little as 1000 miles......As long as they pay you never read about it there. Come over to the samba or clf and find out what really going on. that mag forgets its has a responsibilty to inform the subscriber/buyer when crap they pushed in an articale IS BAD. The manufacturer is saved from exposure because they by ad space. A bullshit conflict of interest. _________________ 70' Beetle Pan off Resto

By an amazing feat of coincidence, I was reading that particular issue yesterday. I never found what I was looking for though. I think it was a later issue. It's been fun to browse through my magazines the last few days. _________________

x3 on the just a parts catalog thing.
Although, it's entertaining to find pics of yourself or friends
attending the VW shows. That happens quite frequently. _________________ ****************************
