We have a safari trail. We've owned it for the last 15 years or so but it's been sitting in our barn undriven for the last 5 years. Maybe next summer we'll get it out and I can post pics. It's on a '64 pan and has a '67 1500cc engine. _________________ '70 std bug (daily driver)

| Mine has been in the family for over 30 years my grandpa traded two Honda trail 70's for it. It sat for about ten years then he passed away I tore it aprt in high school then I got married two kids and a divorce later I have it back on the road it still needs all the cosmetic stuff done but it is all steet legal and everything functions. The kids love it. Post some pics of yours. |

I have the same body, but my dash and hood are different. It may be a different car all-together.
The only problem is that the PO had the back a hacked up, so I get the rest off. I have a mold built to rebuild it, but it is not back to the orignal shape... |

Hello from Central California!
Just picked mine up from a work buddy. He had it for years and decided he was done with it. I can't wait to get started on it but I have a couple bugs I need to get done first. Maybe I'll get the pan out from under it in December. I could use some good photos of the back as the PO cut it up pretty good. He also cut the bottom of the front off and I'd like to fix both these areas.
What's the story with Safari? I heard they were from Hermosa Beach? Are the original owners still around?
Could probably use a little raking and weeding.
See Ya! _________________ Bryan

Somehow this thread has eluded me until now. I'm glad to see other Safari owners on this forum, and to find out who they are.
I have a regular Safari on a 56 pan that I bought twelve years ago. I drove it around the first year then decided to do a partial restore that seemed to take forever, and I'm not done yet.
It seemed like when I had the time I didn't have the funds and vice versa, not to mention way too many hobbies.
The last two years I've been doing mechanical upgrades getting rid of the 56 brakes and steering etc. and now I'm almost ready to start the cosmetic work.
I don't presently have a digital camera but I'll try to borrow one and get some pics for you.

Incidentally do any of you Safari owners know when your body was built.
Mine has a date spray painted on the bottom side of the hood June 14th 1972.
I'm curious if any of yours are like mine and if maybe Safari always dated them this way or not. Of course it's also possible that the first owner might have started building it on that day.
I have the '' Building Your VW Based DuneBuggy '' manual written by Peter Ezzell and John Quan that was published in 1969. Although this manual don't refer to building any specific buggy a lot of the pictures in it show Safaris. Therefor we know they were at least made in the late sixties.

Here is my Safari
How I found it.
A driver. It's not real pretty but it is dependable and will cruise at 65 mph for hours.
Original white Gelcoat cleaned up and now on it's 4th year of driving almost every day from April thru September. Over 17000 trouble free miles
