|
|
so i got the air/fuel gauge installed.
at idle i'm around 11-12. i know i need to adjust my air mixture screw.
as long as i have it floored my ratio is around 14.
at cruising speed until about 3000rpm i'm around 13.8.
once i get up to 3500-4000 my ratio is around 15.2
once i floor it it goes down to 14.4 or so.
BUT if i try to floor it past 4000rpm it bogs down and my ratio is around 16-17.
so i'm having a fuel loss somehow.
my fuel pressure is at 2.5-3psi. 60 idle jets 150 main.
my plugs are a off white or tan color.
so what could be my problem?
it didnt do this before when i didnt have my throttle cable adjusted to open the carbs up all the way. |

Could it be a clog in the main jet circuit? Not the jet itself, but somewhere in the passages? _________________ All the good deals in the world will still make you poor.

it didnt do it before i readjusted my throttle cable and got an extra 1/2 inch of travel.
would an air leak somewhere cause it? |

so i'll be pulling the engine to install a stage 1 pressure plate and super disc from CB.
so while i'm at it i'll pull the gas tank n give it a good shaking to get the stuff out. i'll take the carbs apart n spray out the passages too.
i really hope this fixes my problem.
sux not being able to go past 3500 rpm. |

so i got everythign back together and it drives nice, except for the 3500rpm stumble.
but i do have another issue. on the 1st push the brake peddle goes to the floor, the 2nd push and its got good pressure.
i used one of those vacuum gauge/tester things that lets you bleed the brakes urself and got all the air out.
there's no loss of fluid either
so what could be causing this?
brake pads are adjusted right. |

So here are some updates...
Switched to 140 jets from 150, dropped my gap to 35 from 40 (got the Mallory cdi hooked up with proper coil and rotor) runs smoother with the box hooked up.
I still need to get the ignitor II module though since I have the I.
Hopefully that will have gotten rid of my 3500rpm stumble, switched to a 2.5-3 psi electric pump too.
Since I got rid of the fuel pump I had to get a block off plate, might as well run another breather hose to it... the engine seems to rev up faster now.
I tried some bolt on valve covers to get the valve covers to stop leaking, but they didn’t set right, they're up for sale.
I bought a Kennedy stage 1 clutch a while back and when I went to install it I found that crack, I got another. Works great now.
Also I found a moon gas pedal for cheap, so I got it and got out the dremel to make it fit. My old pedal was sloppy. It’s so much better now.
I did have to replace my shifter coupler in a parking lot a few weeks ago, and then my accelerator cable went out last week. Glad I had extras waiting.
I found a little box at AutoZone that I can plug the harness black wire into that went to the coil that had 6 places to attach other things like my backup light switch, cdi box, fuel pump, and something else too its fused too.

here's a shot of the mid mount i got off the samba and had a friend weld in for me.
and i made a cabinet and seat with understorage for when i dont have the middle seat in. i only had to drill 2 holes each to mount them.

i was able to get most of the oil leak stopped at the valve covers.
the cb bolt ons didnt fit right, maybe cause of the singleports,
the stock valve covers weren't tall enough, the aluminum clip-ons dont have enough pressure at the bales.
the scat stainless steels ones with the little tabs inside to keep the gasket still have worked great though. very little leak now.
now i'm going to find someone to send another set of sp heads i have to get 37mm intake valves, ported and polished, opened up for 90.5 and CC'ed.
here's how it looks now.

i switched out my carbs today and realized i have 52 idle jets, not 60 like i thought. what kinda things would happen if my idle jets were too bog or small?
would it cause the lose of power at 4000rpms i get? |

| Not likely. The idle jets should only affect the mixture at idle if I'm not mistaken. |

so i got to work today after fillign up my tank. after a coupel hours someone tells me it smells like gas outside. i got and check and sure enough gas is leaking out of my gas cap. when i go to turn the cap the gas starts bubbling out, like an overheated radiator.
it a vented cap. it hasnt happened before. what could cause this? |

| You bought the gas when it was ice cold and then the engine compartment settled down to the temperature of a deep mine after you parked? The gas expanded. Try parking with the bus tipped exaggerated away from the filler neck. |

makes sense barryl.
thanks slow steve.
actually i have some photos i want to take of some new things on the bus.
i added a traction bar, redid my front speaker mounts, redid my gauge mounts, added an oil pressure gauge in the engine compartment, i have urethane springplate bushings and chrome torsion covers waiting to be put on, added pedestal mats, redid the top of my center console, had my exhaust redone to make room for the traction bar which came out much better than the 1st time.
i was going to buy a head liner, but 190 plus shipping was the cheapest i can find. so i'm going to get the same stuff i did my door panels with, but use the smooth side and make my own headliner.
i have a set of kadrons from kaddieshak coming that have thier tricks done and a set of sp heads from brothers on the way too with 37.5 intakes, ported, single hd springs, 8mm manifold studs, 90.5, CCd, valve job.
that should open it up nicely!
i\m also getting ready to build up a 1955 stroker, just need crank, cam, and the little stuff to be ready.
right now i can cruise at 4000rpm around 72mph and the bus purrs along.
but my heads temps are usually around 350, lately they creep up to 400.
once i get the heads back i'll take the engine out and do a swap. |

next two things for the bus are making my own headliner out of thin wood or panelling, then cover it with off-white vinyl or maybe a hawaiian print.
also i found a place to get my stock wheels widened to 6 inches, custom & commercial in fontana, 82 a wheel including powdercoating, very nice.
pullign the engine this weekend to put the new heads and kadrons on plus some other little stuff. |
