Do any of the Ghia guru's know why there are so many "Cannot be identified" M numbers.

In what way are they unidentifiable...can the record not be read or are they simply not recorded.

These options were obviously available from the VW agent when the car was ordered...by that token they must be written down somewhere. Confused

Often the physical records are deteriorating to the point that the details aren't legible.

My 66 Type 34 had M code 452 that could not be identified, and I grilled Heike about why. The paper is in poor condition, but she also hinted that the 400 range was used for various options by dealers.

My suspicion is that it was a dealer-installed US equipment package (since my Ghia was completely US spec) that was ordered with the car but not installed until the car was to be shipped to the US, since mine was driven in Germany for nearly two years. However, I have no proof of this.

Mine is an Australian delivery early 1963 model (built 25/10/62)

M009 Yellow tail lights
M020 MPH speedo
M108 Custom Model
M187 Headlamps for left-hand traffic (ie RHD)
M554 Upholstery Leatherette Red
M008 Cannot be identified

Love to know what the M008 is. I don't think there was a lot of variation in specifications of the Australian delivery cars - there weren't that many of them. Basically a RHD euro-spec car.

My Birth Certificate came with M357 - US Equipment (68 Ghia Vert)

I noticed it didn't appear anywhere in this thread or any of the links provided. I assume its closer to M355 perhaps...

Mine came today. Pretty speedy since I ordered it just a couple of Sundays ago...

The best news is that I have the original engine, so we are numbers matching!

Built and shipped 2/64. Destination: San Fransisco.

Manila yellow with black leatherette. (L560] Yes, I know this isn't an interior thread, but I wonder if that is all black, or with off white door panel trim and possibly off white seat upholstery. The unrestored 1964 Ghia convertible in the Gallery appears to have a contrasting door panel insert and seat uoholstery. The color brocures here show all black.

Options:
M128 Whitewalls
M194 Additional mirror, outside right, convex (I assume the orientation is looking at the car from the front?)
M355 US equipment
Seatbelts with retractor
MPH-speedometer
Sealed beam headlamps
Hazard warning system
Without flasher
Laminated windscreen
Ram protection
Reversing light
12 volt system (standard)
12 volt system (US-epuipment)

The M355 equipment brings up some questions. Looking at the list, I wonder if it is and upgraded US spec from the standard? It does have seatbelts (not required on US cars for the 1964 model year- maybe built ahead to meet the upcoming regulations for all 1965 cars?)

Is the hazard warning without the signal flasher? (What in the world would that be? Hmmm...) Or without the headlight flasher?

Reversing light- I suppose I need to look for a switch, or a switch mount in the transaxke?

The 12 volt system was unexpected. Bentley does mention a 12v option with a list of parts. I suppose one could tick that off on the list and have 12v instead of the standard 6v?

PostPosted: Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:49 pm    Post subject: 1959 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet Birth Certificate Reply with quote

So I just got my birth certificate for my 1959 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet. It was built on February 2nd 1959 and delivered on February 3rd 1959. It was delivered to Mahag in Munich, Germany. Mahag is a dealership that is still in existence today. They have multiple dealerships in the Munich area. I'm happy to say that the engine number and chassis match. Here are the M-codes that were listed:

M 139 Sealed Beam Headlamps and Red Rear Lamp Lenses

M 355 US-Equipment

M 578 Top Cover Sand Beige

M 592 Upholstery Leatherette Red

M 951 Exterior Rear-View Mirror

For the M 355 US-Equipment it lists the details of what came with with the package. It includes the MPH-speedometer, Sealed-Beam Headlamps, Hazard Warning System Without Flasher, Laminated Windscreen, Ram Protection, Reversing Light, 6 Volt-system (standard), 6 Volt-system (US-equipment)

Unfortunately, the info says that the color couldn't be determined. The body color of the car in its current state is pearl white. I don't think the color was ever changed. All the hardware and panels seem to match too well to have been a different color. In the car's current state, I don't think it ever had a restoration. I am questioning several things with the info I have. First, is the top cover the actual roof color of the car or just the cover that goes over the top when the top is down? I ask because every picture of pearl white cabrios I have seen have always had a black top. Has anybody else seen any documentation showing a different color top on a pearl cabriolet? I am wanting to keep the car's colors original. Second, did the early Ghias actually come with hazard lights and reverse lamps on the US package or did VW lump all the features from multiple years? If the early Ghias did have those features, does anybody have pics of what they look like? Thanks, Craig

What is a "birth certificate"? I bought my 74 Ghia cabriolet brand new in Sept of 1974. What should I look for?

Pat KG, the birth certificate is something you can get from VW. It shows the date the car was built and where it was delivered. It will also show options that came with the car. Since you bought your car new from the dealership, I doubt there's much you'd learn from the purchase of the certificate. The price for the VW Museum certificate is 50 Euros which is about $63 at the moment. If you'd like to see more about it check the link I posted below:
