I dont have a picture of it but there are many wires hanging just underneath the pushbutton's on the dash, to the left of the steering wheel. They are all tangled and mix matched. its a mess... but the headlights, the gauge lights and the gas gauge are all not working.. i will post a picture of it tomorrow but does anyone have any suggestions of what it could be and what i could do to fix it[/img]

Welcome to the Type 3 world! There is a wiring diagram in the technical section that might be of use to you.

Get this, pull the driver seat out, put a nice comfy pillow-blanket on the floor, lay on your back so to get a good look under the dash, look over the wiring diagram thats easy to read and follow even JMSkater can do it Wink Have fun finding whats missing and conectining the dots.

This is truly a case of the dreading is worse than the doing. Good luck.

That was me several years ago. This is what I had:

It was a 12 hole fuse box from a later car. Things were plugged randomly onto it. I went down to Kinko's, pulled up these three items:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/type3_1500S_64.jpg
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/type3_1500S_64_fuses.jpg
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/type3_1500S_64_key.jpg
printed them out in color and laminated them. Then I did as Jason suggested and lay down in my car. It took me about 4 hours of tracing and running wires and I got everything hooked up. I feared the job for months and didn't do anything. I tried to get a couple different local guys to do it for me. I'm glad they refused. It's not as hard as it looks at first.

If they are original steel sprints in very good shape (can't tell for sure from the picture) I'd guess $400-$500 for the set on a good day. $300 will probably get them sold quickly. I had mine up for $500 and got a few nibbles, and lots of lowball offers. I've since decided to run them on my square.

Don't duplicate the fuse colors seen above. There shouldn't be any blue fuses and a bunch of the others look wrong too. The wiring diagram or owner's manual has the correct fuse ratings for each spot.

well i recently went in to try and tackle this job.... i found that there were many wires which had been cut short. random ends sticking out different places. ALL of the wires coming from the push buttom terminals had been cut... and there are missing fuses. Im thinking at this point it might be easier to just buy a complete wiring harness and start over. What do you guys think? would it be easier to try and fix what i have or go for a new harness. any help is appreciated thanks..

Follow all the wires. Make sure they are connected. The headlights have a brown wire that is ground and is grounded in the front trunk off the loom. Make sure they are screwed down. After that make sure the switch works and you have power.

The only bad thing about all this is that there may be a gremlin hiding somewhere-you know the one that got the guy before you to hack things up for some reason. Be prepaired to find it and squish it.

well i got the headlights all hooked up and somehow got them to work but only by pushing in the high beam button on the dash, the low beam one only turns on the parking lights, im thinking this is due to the headlight relay... on the wiring diagram it has 6 pins and on mine it only has 5. in the diagram it lists 30, F,S, J, 56, 56a. the one that i have has 30, S, 56, 56b and 56a.... so does anybody have any helpful information? any help is appreciated.

The relay has corosion in its contacts. Flip from hight to loww a bunch to see if it clears. If not youll have to open the relay and clean it.

The two buttons on the dash would be working fine if working as you explained. The "low beam" button is really the button for the parking lights. It is not supposed to turn on the headlights. The one you call the "high beam" button is the actual headlight switch. Your high-beam switch is on the back side of the turn signal lever. Just turn the headlights on and tap the backside of the lever and it changes from high to low. If you don't have an owners manual, check out the one on-line here.

Okay thank you I was thinking that could be a possibility but wasn't sure, what would explain one of my lights being on high beam and one low
