Models would be nice Very Happy

Optima batteries ROCK. I run one in my 59 (red top as well). I experienced the same difference with cranking that you did. Excellent documentation of all work done- if you ever sell this bus (which I somehow doubt will happen) this will be valuable info.

Bus wont start. It's been sitting in the garage since my last trip.....

I smell fuel so I don't suspect the pump, I am thinking spark.

Check plugs...look good.

Found the idle solenoid hand tight, so I tightened it.

Plugged jet? I know you said you smell fuel but check with a mirror and see if it's squirting down and/or dump a little fuel down the carb and see if it starts and runs out.

Decided to check the compufire module....

1. Ignition key on
2. Test light clamped to ground
3. Poke light onto coil negative terminal
4. As you rotate the engine with a wrench, the test light should go ON and OFF for each cylinder.

See test light ON in top left of photo.

Rotate engine a little, See test light should be OFF, but it is still dimly lit... Evil or Very Mad

Looks like Compufire is bad (bought it in 2008).

Swapping to points required a little work to get the square wire in the round hole. I used a utility knife and shaved the gray plastic down.

Points are in:

Distributor installed and wired up:

I then set timing to 30degrees at 35,000 rpm with vacuum hose plugged.

Then installed my temporary RPM Gauge:

Starts and runs like it should.....
Now to buy my replacement parts: points, condenser, and 3psi electric pump.

Thanks snoop, I did just that, and saw the stream of fuel hitting the throttle plate when I pulled the throttle open.

Bus been driving Ok with points. Feels different, like less power. Even though I have set points gap to .016, I don't have a dwell meter, so setting may not be optimal.

At some part of the rpm range, I have to give it Wide Open Throttle to get it to pull like it used to from a start off.

Anyway, stopped by Paul at JB Bugs in Jensen Beach. Picked up a Pertronix and installed it right there in the shop while the distributor was still hot to the touch.

I set timing to 30degrees at 3500rpm (with vacuum line off).

With Pertronix, the engine feels smoother, and the power is back.
I definitely feel the difference between driving up with points, and heading back home with a Pertronix.

I did top speed most of the way (about 70-74mph).

Top speed for me has my engine running less than 3800rpm.
Here I snapped a pic while doing about 71mph (GPS verified), see rpm is at 3708

Someone asked over the weekend and I had to go figure it out:
* 18,166 miles driven since I bought the bus in Feb 2008, (drove it from the car carrier the first day I got it)

* 6,929 miles on the original engine
* 1,888 miles on used pistons
* 9,349 miles on new mexi engine

Switching to Brad Penn 10W30 oil because I have been brainwashed by thesamba.com

WTF, I thought I would have been done in 10 minutes.
I spent over an hour scraping old gasket off the engine case and sump plate cover, and moving the bus around so I could do it easier.

Didn't do it this time, but next time I read that I should apply a thin coat of wheel bearing grease to both of the cardboard gaskets to help seal, and make future removal easier.

Gave the clutch wingnut two turns.
Changed the fuel filter.
Replaced the oil in the oil bath air cleaner.
Fixed engine bay air scoop under the bus that came loose when I drove over some grass.
Been at a steady 22mpg for the past many tankfulls.

I will see if the thinner oil viscosity affects the mpg as much as others say.

Spent the weekend in Key West, FL.
5 hours of driving each way....

Stayed at the Speakeasy Inn right on Duval St. I left the bus in the same spot all weekend! Only cost me a $25 ticket for the convenience. Smile

The rumheads donwstairs told me it was the most photographed thing on the street, every few minutes people would stop by to take pictures beside it. We took bicycles and rode them everywhere...

Got a new steering wheel from EIS parts yesterday.
Replacing the Flat 4 brand wheel I have for one that is more firm.
I got the EIS parts wheel cheap because the color is not 'correct'
It looks almost light olive green to me.

Definitely worth the $124!!!

Much firmer. Does not flex like the Flat 4. Makes the drive feel tighter, especially during turning and backing.
Go get one!!!
The color as you see is off, I am actually thinking of painting the horn button to match. Easier, and once the color is uniform, its not as noticeable to me.

good to know, thanks! I would need a black one though! Are you planning on using that flexible spray bomb paint for plastic?
