Am I the only person who thinks your brakes are upside down? Adjuster should be on the top...e-brake mechanism should be on the top. Is this because of the lowering thing?

Yes, they are upside down compared to stock, it is because it is lowered.
The brakes are from a Type 3.

So how's the status of your bus now? I experienced that problem before on my '67 vert' Karmann Ghia. We replaced the fulcrum and axles, and everything turned out well. The knocking sound was really annoying that ever sound is like vibrating so intense that you always foresee what would be the effect thereafter.

Running great for now!
Haven't opened the deck lid except to show someone the engine.
No squeaks except from clutch pedal spring.
No clunks from axle on take off.

It is a good thing that it runs great now...

Cool one buddy!

Nice check list, I think you covered all the bases. Although it looks to me like your a little lean by the looks of your plugs. Or maybe its the way they look on the computer.

I thought the same thing Bill...
Before Bulli Brigade, I adjusted my fuel mixture screw 1/8th of a turn inwards/tighter/clockwise to add a little more fuel.

I also saw my oil was above the line before I left the house.
I drained it slightly to end up right below the top mark on the dipstick.

I did 483 miles over the Bug Jam/Bulli Brigade XX weekend and got about 22 mpg on average after doing the math.

Looked like a preheat gasket leak, so I just removed, flipped upside down and retightened.

Sometimes when I start engine, the exhaust tip would bang on the bumper when then engine shook and make it sound like my engine is broken.... so I clamped the muffler to the bumper..

I like to look and see if and where any oil leaks are starting....

My silicone Wolfsburg West drain screen gaskets are doing well, the drain plug is not doing so well, I may switch back to the factory drain plate without the center drain bolt, as that seems to be where the drips come from.

Lookin' good! Way to stay on top of your maintenance!

Couple of little things, I would crawl under there with some wax and grease remover solvent and some of those blue paper shop towels and wipe down/remove all of the oil/grease/ tranny gear oil from all of your components (brake backing plates and inner sides of your wheels, under push rod tubes, bottom of crankcase and transaxle). Clean everything that has any residue on it! Get 'em all clean and dry. Then after your next drive, crawl back under and if you have any leaks, the source of them will be much more apparent.

I would not clamp that clamp on the damper/tailpipe to the bottom edge of the bumper blade. The engine is supposed to move or rock a little and be independent of the fixed bumper blade. Part of your contact problem "might be" that I think you have the wrong tailpipe for a Split motor on there. Hard to see from the angle of the photos above, but I think you have the tailpipe from a Bay Bus or Type 3 on there (more of an "L" shape tailpipe)? The correct one that clears the Split-Bus blade properly looks a lot like a "?" or question mark.

Enjoy that old Bus!
