Lookin' good! Way to stay on top of your maintenance!

Couple of little things, I would crawl under there with some wax and grease remover solvent and some of those blue paper shop towels and wipe down/remove all of the oil/grease/ tranny gear oil from all of your components (brake backing plates and inner sides of your wheels, under push rod tubes, bottom of crankcase and transaxle). Clean everything that has any residue on it! Get 'em all clean and dry. Then after your next drive, crawl back under and if you have any leaks, the source of them will be much more apparent.

I just use brake cleaner spray. Fast and clean.
What you see in the pics is after a few miles after a cleaning.

BulliBill wrote:

I would not clamp that clamp on the damper/tailpipe to the bottom edge of the bumper blade. The engine is supposed to move or rock a little and be independent of the fixed bumper blade.

I know, I figured the flexing will now occur at the muffler to pipe connection.

BulliBill wrote:
Part of your contact problem "might be" that I think you have the wrong tailpipe for a Split motor on there. Hard to see from the angle of the photos above, but I think you have the tailpipe from a Bay Bus or Type 3 on there (more of an "L" shape tailpipe)? The correct one that clears the Split-Bus blade properly looks a lot like a "?" or question mark.

Enjoy that old Bus!

Bill Bowman

I am using a Wolfsburg West replacement pipe.
My problem is it needs to be close to the bumper because my bus is so low, but the banging I can't take, so I am willing to see how this work out. I may get a flex hanger from a muffler shop an use it somehow to do the same task.

Thanks for the feedback Bill Smile

you could c-notch the bumper, solves the problem, is easily reversed, and still looks better than the old-school pea-shooter holes Smile

I have been reading most of this thread trying to solve a swing axel problem in my 63 Bug. I have had 17 VW's in the last 25 years and I am truly inspired by your maintenance and pictures that you have provided, documenting for all of us to see.

I really miss the Florida VW scene as I am Coast Guard and have been stationed in Stuart, St. Pete, and Miami. Now I'm in North Virginia and I feel like the lone ranger but I am determined to up my maintenance and TLC game after seeing all your pics and great feedback from other members.

Great job!!
