Wow that service install is quite unsightly!
I haven't got the facilities to access my chassis like this, unfortunately. |

Wow great idea! i'll certainly keep that in mind. I make smaller openings to investigate problems...

Got the choke cable out!!
Took over a week, but I set up a funnel to keep deep creep soaking in.
Then I attached a ratcheting tie down to start putting pressure on it while keeping deep creep soaking in.
Then I attached vice grips on the other side to keep pressure going that way as well.
Throughout the week I kept ratcheting the tie down and spraying deep creep in.
Tonight I felt it give a little bit so I started pulling, and got this:
And I got it all!
Then I blew out all the crap and have a clear tube, finally! _________________ 54 Semaphore Beetle

Great job getting it all out! I had gotten some of the coil winding out and then it snapped. I figure I got a total of ohhh.. 3 inches out. |

I have been reading about removal of stuck choke cables now for the last year, and have a grip on the methods people are having success with. My situation is a bit different though. My choke cable is cut off flush with the edge of the tube where it enters the chassis at front, and is cut off at the back, with maybe an inch or so of the damaged wound sheath visible. I think it would pull apart.
In short, I have nothing to grab. I imagine I can try to pick at the cut off winding in front, and then start pulling the winding out, but it sounds like they more often break.
I also read about trying to tap the whole cable and sheath out using conduit, or thick wire.
Anyone have an idea how I might get started? I do plan to remove the gas tank, attach a funnel, and start trying to get lubricant into the tube with the front of the car raised to begin with.
Thanks! _________________ Plate of shrimp |

Try a screw, then pull on it. |

I've joined the club and my choke won't come out.
Is it favorable to pull the coiled wire so it unravels? _________________ Charmaine

Well... I must have eaten horseshoes for breakfast.
Pulled on the cable, unravelling it. Pulled and pulled. The plastic sheathe broke into about 4 pieces. We had a little coiled wire left to pull out and after determining about 20" of sheathe remained inside... We pulled the remaining coiled wite out and the sheath came with it.
It's out! I ran a thick 8 gauge wire through and the tube is clear. Rusty, but clear! _________________ Charmaine

Tried a long course thread drywall screw. It took! It grabbed the spiral, and I used a slide hammer to work an inch or so of the cable out, and now I am soaking it with deep creep.

So I started the pull today, after a week of feeding it deep creep.
I made up my own method, which resulted in 1 inch of stretched coil winding per attempt, using a claw hammer and a vice grips.
I spent the afternoon doing this, netting 10+ feet of stretched coil winding before it broke.
I estimate that I got about 3 feet of the coil winding out. That leaves about 3 feet still in the tube, and I have nothing to grab at the rear. Anyone have an idea? _________________ Plate of shrimp |

I have heard that affixing a truck antenna to a drill works. Flatten the end so I can grab the wire. Once it grabs it, pull. _________________ Charmaine

My choke cable was broken off at both ends on my 59 Euro rag project. I filled the tube with PB Blaster let it soak for a couple of weeks then used a long drywall screw at the transmission end of the chassis. Today using a pry bar, vise grips and a strong pull.....I GOT IT OUT!! WHOO HOO!
Thanks for all the tips fellow Samba experts. Now if I can just get my split case trans to quit leaking at the sideplates.

I'm jealous. Mine is broken off and now inaccessible. My last option without going totally nuclear will be to remove the gas tank and try to drive the cable out with graduated lengths of 3 gauge copper wire.
If that fails, I'll run it through the cabin like in the old tech bulletin.
A permanent and proper repair (like a new tube installed) would come later down the road, like when it's time to paint again.
Anybody have any new tricks...?

I just spent all day trying to get mine out...... no luck so far. I've tried most methods other than the cut method as well. hopefully you have better results
