Be glad you don't have a Chilton, their aircooled VW manual is horrible.
Haynes and Clymer are a little better. The John Muir "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive for the Compleat Idiot" is also a good start for newbies. Then move up to the factory repair manuals.
Speaking of which, compression specs on the 1600 engine, from the Robert Bentley Official Service Manual: (the reason the numbers are lower starting in model year 1972 was because they lowered the compression ratio)
That's at sea level, numbers will be lower at higher elevations. And despite the 85lbs wear limit, usually anything under 100PSI is considered pretty worn out.

my original post was asking the proper compression.....i found out there is no easy way to get a compression tester tight into where you screw in the sparkplug....looks like you need to take off all of the sheet metal shrouding to get a wrench on the compression tester....
good news is I found my sparkplugs were loose....so i tightened them up and she runs just like before...don't I look like a fool...

I've never needed to screw a compression tester on "wrench tight" to get the tester's O-ring to seat. Just as tight as it'll go by twisting the tube. |

X2. I just lube with a little anti-sieze and twist the hose tightly. |
