So Joe still has this single cab. Progress has been slow but he's been plugging away. Once it was realized there wasn't much usable of the original body, he sourced a donor body. The donor is a '58 and from what I understand, it was a completely stripped field find but really solid. So it was a good fit for this. I'd stop by his shop from time to time and just shake my head in amazement at what he was trying to do...
Once Joe went as far as he could, he enlisted the help of Mike Bailey. Mike's part of the Edgefinder VW family here in Phoenix and does excellent metal and fabrication work. Mike blended the donor body with what was left of the barndoor parts and got it all set back on the chassis. The result is awesome and it's great to see this thing back in one piece.
So now I'm helping to get this truck to paint. I picked it up at Joe's shop up in Scottsdale and dropped it at Pro Strip Mediablasting for stripping. It's back at my place now and I'm starting on the body work. I'll do my best to keep this updated and get this thing to paint before too long...

I've been needing to catch this thread up and just can't get motivated to go out to the shop with a low temp of 98*F(36.6C for everyone outside the US) this morning. So here it goes...
With the body roughed out and in first primer, it was time to start on the undercarriage. There were a few surprises when it came back from the blaster, but nothing too bad. I had to do some repair at this front left frame area, and the back of the same wheel well was pretty thin...
Some of the cable tubes weren't installed so I sorted that out. I had to R&R the rearmost outriggers to run the e-brake cables correctly as Barndoor runs a little further out and the floor support was cut for a later bus...

So onto final prep and painting the undercarriage. My oldest son Mason has been helping out in the shop on breaks from college and there was lots of pitting to fill here.
Matt Howard at Deluxe Customs will be helping me with final paint again so we needed to figure out the dove blue. He uses ProSpray and their codes are usually pretty good, but this one wasn't. You can see here it took some work to get right...
And time for final prep and paint. PPG's DP epoxy primer, then PPG DCC single stage urethane grey matched and flattened, and then some blue overspray.

Thanks John!!
With the bottom done, it's off the rotisserie and onto fitting and body working doors...
The side door was pretty nice but had some damage to the lower inner support, so I made and replaced a section...
The decklid needed a little modification along with the R-corner...

The bed didn't look too bad before blasting, but after, it was pretty well pitted, lots of pinholes and kind of beat. While Joe really wanted to save the original bed, we came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the amount of work to repair it, and I could refinish the areas underneath much better with it out of the way. Remember, this is from the donor '58.
With the bed out of the way, The engine compartment was body worked and primed, and the treasure chest area was prepped, primed and painted.

Out here in the East, the treasure chest floor usually rusts away worse than the bed floor.
Something about the ground moisture.

Thanks Patrick!
So here I was hoping to install a new bed, but Joe insisted on using original. He came up with this one locally. This was a ton of work!
The pieces were already blasted. Here's the front section removed, straightened, the bottom side primed and painted and installed...
Same process for the rear. There were some pinholes to weld up and I got a coat of paint in the engine compartment while it was more accessible...

I think posts like this (and the modern car restoration shows) can mislead someone who wants to take on a project into thinking that it's a lot easier than it really is. I click on a thread and see a "simple" bed install that took a few minutes to review, with photos attached! But that had to be a very tedious process and one that really was not worth it, given the reproduction metal available, except for that client that wants OG metal. I respect the commitment because at that point it is beyond making the right financial decision. I also commend you for being willing because there are times that this has come up in a variety of areas of my life and I have just said, "I don't want to, no matter what they are paying". Thanks for sharing as I enjoy the quality of your work! |
