That was tried (5th stud) by Mark Stephens. Didn't have any luck with it. Gone from the scene as well.

Good luck though.

Dave Bonbright at Engine Masters had dual blowers on his T1 Drag car engine, I was at a Sacramento Bug in, more than twenty years ago, he broke the then held 1/4 mile record with a partial pass (computer shut off the engine 2/3’s down the track, when it detected elevated EGT on one cylinder) he couldn’t back it up the ET as there was no time to fix the problem…

Anyway he did a bunch of Machining work on my Ghia’s engine, and I was down at his shop a lot in those days and he had a 5th and a sixth stud I believe, smaller diameter 8MM studs, if my memory serves me right, they where between the sets of four… He has a lot of knowledge on superchargers; perhaps you could get some pointers from him to keep the lids on…

Yeah ok, maybe you can bring the jet down here so I don't have to wait on the mail anymore? lol

I have a few more to make, probably do the same thing again for the outlet flange. If you feel like being a pal, jet me some IDF flanges and put a nice radius on one side so I don't need ram stacks. 3/16" aluminum should be fine, I don't think my welder will do 1/4". With helium sure, but I just asked at the supply place and it's like 6 times more expensive than argon...

While we're all feeling like pals, feel free to smuggle some of that helium over here! Laughing I called 5 welding shops in this area just to see how much it runs for a small cylinder of helium, and every single shop laughed and basically told me "Good luck getting a supplier to sell you helium while it's on national backorder. You can't even get party balloons filled for a 5 year old's birthday party in this area!" Confused

You know the world is coming to an end when you can't even get Helium for welding!

Yeah, we were supposed to run out in 2000, as well. Then we were going to run out in 2010.

I can respect and understand their decision to restrict helium sales due to short supply. It's when they tell you it's on short supply for 20+ years, but continue to produce enough supply over that 20 year period to meet demand....all the while charging you more and more every time you fill your vehicle up with said "supply". Rolling Eyes

I don't know about you guys, but I'm (just now) starting to think a few someone's are making a little profit off of this whole "gas shortage." I'm not totally certain though, so give me another 20 years to think about it before I get back to you. Wink

The worlds helium supply has come from just one mine in the world. Yes, helium comes from mine(s).
A number of new mines are coming online more or less as we speak. And helium can be extracted from the atmosphere too, only at higher cost.
So it will not run out anytime soon. It's the second most abundant element in the universe.

I'll have to swing by menards and see if they have a cheapo round-over router bit that I can ruin on this aluminum. Laughing

Shocked

That may be the fastest thing you've ever done, I'm impressed. Laughing
Don't undercut the bottom of the plate with the bit, if you find one. If it looks like it's going to go too far, just send it in the mail with the plates and I'll round it over attached to the manifold.

Oh I've been wanting to get one for years now... Maybe tax time, if the government would give me a decent return.

Edit:
Plates are in the mail, should see them by Friday.
I almost didn't have enough packing tape!

Plates received, which caused me to buy some more tools to finish the job. Picked up a 20,000 RPM electric die grinder for finish porting the heads and manifolds, and a small router so I could machine radii in the top plates. I ended up with a 3/16" rounding bit, inverted the router by putting it in the vice, then machined the top plates as they were mounted to the manifolds. After that I hand sanded them, so they look nice and purdy. Hopefully I can have them boxed in and welded next weekend, then I need some aluminum charge piping to go to the air/water IC I'm fabbing.

Looks pretty good!
Did the router seem to cut it ok? One thing I was a little worried about trying that was the bit grabbing and making a mess of the aluminum.

Cuts like buttah, just squirt some WD-40 on there and make chips. Laughing If you try to go too fast it does gall up pretty easy, the biggest thing is making sure you're only cutting the radius and not trying to take out big swaths of material. After all it's a rounding bit, not an end mill. I think that's my next big purchase, a small mill or maybe a lathe.

I'd love to have a small cnc mill... and a 4'x4' waterjet... and a TIG welder... and the space for all that. Laughing

Space? Hell, I was TIG'ing in the laundry room today because it was rainy and cold! Laughing

Speaking of which, sub-project "cut an air to air IC in half and make it a air to water IC" is in full swing. Cool

I think I'm gonna order some aluminum J-bends for the charge piping, but it'll have to wait till payday. Flights home killed what I had left, and something tells me it ain't over yet. You know how the holidays are... Rolling Eyes Anyway once I have some more cash I'll box up the end tanks, and see how it all looks. Hopefully pressure testing goes well when I'm done, I'd hate for this thing to have a hole in it somewhere.

What, didn't want to drive like we did?! Razz

I was wondering if you were gonna go that route for cooling, makes sense... Perfect place to use them there.
Think it'll cool the charge enough though?

Why wouldn't it? I'm only asking for like 10-12 PSI out of the thing, it shouldn't get too hot. And if it does, I'll shoot it with methanol.
