|
|
Seems that 2009 is looking to be the year of ID plates for sale for early/rare busses. In the UK this is seen as pretty much illegal really, as there is no vehicle to 'recognise' the identity, I was wondering on what people on here thought of someone who would buy an ID to 'make up' a matching vehicle?
My opinion? Yes, that vehicle did exist in the past, but I wouldnt feel comfortable with creating a reproduction of it really, kinda defeats the object of owning an old/rare v-dub I think. _________________ To catch a fish, you must first think like a fish.... |

I was thinking exactly the same thing, surely it's not a good idea to be selling ID tags to these rare old buses. _________________

Slightly different but i used a new blank one for the 58 Westy i had. I had the chassis number from the body and the birth cert so i was happy to do it. You can also buy blanks for 356's.
The bus ones pop up on ebay from time to time, i think as a collectable they are fine but should not be used to clone a bus that was made over 50 years ago... _________________ 64 356 C Coupe |

..what's to stop someone putting one on a completely 'new' bus- built from Gerson panels- & selling it as completely restored? _________________ ....just cause you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there!.... |

Interesting and good debate. I am the seller of one of these IDs. From the bus I cut up - I also have the whole rear 2 feet of the bus... rear window, engine lid and roof. Hanging on my"trophy wall". If I included that with the ID - would it then be considered a "restoration" and be morally right? Where do you draw the line...? |

I think the biggest concern is a bus could be stolen to order and given a new identity for the price of a £150 vin number bought off ebay and then sold for thousands to some unsuspecting buyer. This was happening constantly with Harley Davidsons here in the UK, people were paying well over the odds for a Harley frame with log book to use the identity on a stolen bike or even buying the far cheaper 2 stroke harleys and using that log book on a stolen Harley. |

It is an interesting question, particularly when a lot of the finds in Europe now have less and less good metal attached, my own deluxe is included in this list! For a rare bus, it now seems normal to replace the entire chassis between the axles, along with complete new sides, replacement roof, new front etc. I guess with these, the framework, or original rectangle of a bus remains, so that is the decisive point? Then again, the top half deluxe busses that are being found and are being restored have a healthy debate going on about them too.
I am not saying it is wrong to restore a bus that starts out as 10% of a bus, as long as it is recognised as one of these busses rather than mostly OG. I was thinking that a few years down the line it would be difficult to tell the difference, but then I think back to the '51/'54 deluxe that is in Japan, this bus is still recognised as a mix of 2 busses and it was done some years ago, I tend to forget how small the global barndoor scene is.
I think Tonny's register is an excellent record and help for checking any bus out, so as long as the person who is in the market for a barndoor is aware that these kind of busses can exist, then recognising them shouldnt be a problem. _________________ To catch a fish, you must first think like a fish.... |

This is true, some things are just so rare to pass up! For example:

I agree, its pretty messed up to re-use them.
But.. to flip it on its head,
Can you get tags reproduced to replace damaged or lost tags from know numbered buses?
Surely someone must do them due to all the 100 point resto cars running a nice shinny tag? |
