I agree, its pretty messed up to re-use them.

But.. to flip it on its head,

Can you get tags reproduced to replace damaged or lost tags from know numbered buses?
Surely someone must do them due to all the 100 point resto cars running a nice shinny tag?

Yep repro tags available Wink

I want a blank ID plate - after going backwards and forwards with VW over the last digit ( supposed to be a 9 ) which they proved as I suspected after cleaning the rust off was a 3. Not only am I going to stamp the chassis number under the body number up front but return the ID plate that was removed when VW fitted the esperscher heater after it left the factory! Very Happy

Not going too far off topic but what was it with VW stamping the chassis number so lightly! Laughing

I'd like to have a replacement for my torn and corroded one but I'm suspect of the quality of the repros. If a part isn't produced correctly there is no point in doing it. I'm thinking of sitting there with my restored barndoor, happy with the results, then having to justify that it is even "real" because it has a fake ID tag that isn't quite right. If it's going to be done they better be perfect. And along those lines if you're buying a barndoor it should be easy to spot one with a fake tag, for now at least.....

Somebody stole it from there....

Yes, JD has the earlier 5-row VIN plate available. Look good. I think i saw others on eBay too, but this was a while back.
The correct bus 53-55 3-row style VIN plate is not yet reproduced afaik.

The German Schwimmwagen/Kubel parts guru Hans Schuckenboehmer said he can do them, but it would mean a €1000 investment for the top & bottom tooling - with then an additional €30 per pressed plate. Hans does very nice VIN plates correct for Schwimms etc. Maybe a few of us can get together to share the cost? Ten people would make it viable? Maybe Hans would contribute to the €1000 tooling cost?

Anyone else have a lead or possibility for the 3-row plate?

I now bought one from JD just in case nobody will make them in near future...

Anyway I would need a 3 row for my 54.

Hope somebody steps up? Ricardo maybe?

Or like Rockstock said Hans Schuckenboehmer?

I know of a few ex Swedish busses that lost their 3 row tags when they were new due to an Eberspacher being fitted at the dealers. Some dealers relocated them to another part of the body, some dealers relocated them to the bin unfortunately! Rolling Eyes

Be aware that if you transport a vehicle with any kind of altered VIN across the US border, you will likely lose your vehicle, if it is discovered. Likewise in my state of NY, possessing an altered VIN is frowned upon by the management.

we are not talking altering VINs here, just replacing the missing original data tag. the stamped VIN in the car stays untouched. it is not fraudulent.

What are the specifications to stamp the numbers correctly? I am thinking of the font type and size. And who can do that job?

My 51 is one of those that had the tag relocated to the bin by the dealer due to an Eberspächer being fitted... Rolling Eyes Verdammt nochmal!
