I'm in the planning/build stages of my '71 KG, and have considered installing a BN2, but not too crazy about the idea of having a jet engine over the gas tank... Laughing

lol yeah when they light up they make a small boom and it does sound like a little jet engine, freaks me out every time.

The late BN2 is a bit safer than the early version, the fuel pump signal is driven by the rpm of the fan, so you will never get a situation where fuel is being dumped into a unit with a non spinning ventilation fan. The key is to get the metering pump to deliver the right amount of fuel per pull, there are failsafe systems that shut it down if it is not lit.

Oh man, the pump I ordered arrived and it works perfectly, that gas heater never worked so good, no more "boom" its more of a dull thud, and it starts within 30 seconds, I guess all I ever needed was the correct fuel supply. My old pump was from a BN4 so it was very rich.
I ordered it from ebay and it shipped from Poland, if you do the money conversion the price is right.

I finalized my BN2 install last weekend
- output ducting is routed to defog windows with heat
- extra relay added to defog windows with no heat blower only, fresh air from the nostrils still works
- my engine heater boxes are still connected but only supply heat to the back seat and floor vents
- so far no failed starts when I have been testing it and no overheat condition, so it seems to be working as designed
- It hogs up about 1/3rd of my trunk space, which sucks but hey, I live in Canada heat is a must have

Your install looks nice. I also have a BN2 installed in my Ghia. Question - what size fuse do you use in the unit - the one that is under the plastic cover? I am using an 8 amp. It has gone out on me every now and then. Seems like it should be a 16 amp. Thanks.

Thanks!
I have a white (8A) fuse there and another red (16A) fuse at the fuse box.
I think that fuse has a different function on the later metering pump BN2 heaters, there is a thermostat beneath that assembly that will ground that fuse if it overheats. If you have the late BN2 like me try checking that.

I had the engine out for a few upgrades, here is a pic.
It is a homemade Type 4 version of a CB hideaway header
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Since the turbo sits where the T4 oil filter is I had to run a full flow filter and because the turbo sits where the Left heater box is supposed to be, I had to make a custom one.

Here is an engine update, beehive springs installed!
my redline has now gone up to 7k, which is a good thing since the single hd springs started getting floaty with higher boost and rpm

PostPosted: Thu Jul 05, 2018 6:41 am    Post subject: QUEST FOR A/C Reply with quote

So I have started a new air conditioning project for the ghia.

QUEST FOR A/C

The goal is to have the a/c work with my T4 turbo setup and the vintage DPD dash unit I picked up on the samba, this rules out buying one of the modern aftermarket kits that are available online ... I will have to make my own Rolling Eyes

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

here is a shot of it installed in my parts car, its missing some parts but seems to work

So here is what I am starting with:

- beat up dpd a/c underdash evaporator unit I picked up from the Samba classifieds
- China made Sanden SD508 style compressor from ebay
- universal A/C barrier hose/drier/binary switch kit from ebay
- couple of 12x14 parallel flow condensers from ebay
- couple of 12" fans from ebay
- red tek R12a refrigerant
- A/C service kit from Amazon - has manifold gages and vacum pump

My plan of attack
1. clean up dash unit, replace TXV, make it complete and mount it in my black ghia
2. tear down engine to long block and fabricate mounts for the compressor
3. fabricate brackets and mount condensers/fans under car
4. run and connect the hoses/drier/binary switch
5. check for leaks and fill with refrigerant

It sounds as though you aready have everything you need parts wise to install working A/C in your Ghia project so this is likely a mute question, but have you considered going with an all electric automotive A/C system?

Perhaps you could even mix-and-match and utilize just an electric compressor with the rest of your other "standard" A/C components?
That would save you the effort of fabricating a compressor mount for your engine, and would also eliminate the parasitic horsepower losses associated with the belt driven compressor.

Just a thought.

I actually did look into that! ... Infact that was my first choice, I looked at the masterflux (SHM) and the chinese boyard compressors.
A nice feature is that I could mount it in the ghia's nose and put some weight there to improve the handling, however I found the cost too high (like 1000 bucks for just the compressor vs 150 for a standard one)
Maybe in the future when the cost of these pumps drop I will switch over to electric

I don't mind fabricating stuff like brackets and hp parasite compressors dont bother me as long as I am frosty cool in my 200+hp black ghia Twisted Evil

I took apart the evaporator unit to check it out, there are plenty of issues with it ...
Its made out abs plastic which is pretty brittle, so there are lots of cracks and large missing chunks
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I was able to melt small chunks of plumbing pipe with a soldering iron and add material by “welding” plastic back onto it. It was a super nasty smelling process that required special ventilation but it worked
Also finding parts like the fan cover for this thing is pretty difficult ... but I have a 3-d printer, so I printed it
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The vents needed love too, I was able to fix them by gluing vanagon a\c vents to the dpd frames

Did you scan that part, or have to 'build it' in sketchup or something like that?

I modeled it in 3d studio max, getting the scale right was a bit tricky.

Evaporator unit is mounted, it will have to come out again later on to make the hose connections. I added leds to indicate when the fan/compressor are active and integrated the gas heater switch

Today I made the frame for the condensers, they are 12x14 parallel flow universal ones from ebay and a couple if 12" fans. I will be using a horn relay to switch them on/off

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

underneath my ghia I had a few problems as there is no room to mount this.
- my oil thermostat needs to be moved
- my bugpack sway bar no longer fits, I will be switching to the empi style one that is shorter and will need to make a custom mount
- mt mid engine mount needs to be modified to allow more room for the condenser assembly

My wife had a 74 Ghia that had a complete dealer installed A/C unit. The condenser was mounted on the beam between the beam mounting brackets. I bet you could build a standoff bracket to mount the condensers and provide better air flow then add a discrete scoop under the nose to direct air to the condensers. Another option, one I am considering, is mounting the condensers in each wheel well and using either a scoop or the turn signal opening to route air to them. I
am also considering placing the radiators there as well (Subaru conversion.) I got the idea from a Porsche Boxter. You would need to build a crossover line to join the two but you already need to do that anyway.

Watching with interest,
Emil
