Got an unexpected project today when I came up on a stop light and another driver wasnt paying attention. It isnt as bad as it could have been but i would rather that it hadnt happened at all. At least Ive got something to keep me busy over the summer!

Keep up the faith, rebuild it better than before. Glad you were not hurt.
I guess now you will get a new chrome rear bumper. _________________ ## ROG ##

That crank pulley looks narly. I got run over by a ram 4x4. Pushed the exhaust into the pulley and caused a low oil pressure situation that turned a 1915 into a 2054. Even the solid motor mount was bent up.
I may have gotten carried away with the frame repair.

A friends car was hit like that and got $14,000 from hagarty.
He repaired the damage and repainted the entire car.

That's a beautiful bug. It deserves only the best. Check that motor over and throughout completely for the slightest "tick" that doesn't sound right. _________________ '73 super. |

Sadly, they'll probably total the car, since it will cost more to fix than they feel it's worth. You should however be able to reach a settlement with them, and keep the car in the process. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

It's going to be a total loss for sure.
Get your receipts handy as well as start pulling comps maybe from here on thesamba to show like vehicles and what they are selling for-you are most likely going to have to go back and forth to reach an agreement.
Or get an attorney if you are hurt and let them handle it all. I hate to say that but from experience that is how it works. I did it myself and got screwed in the end. This country is so litigious. |

The body looks repairable. However.............It looks like the engine took most of the impact. Even where the pully is not damaged, you can see that the crankshaft has been shoved into the case _________________ Come on, It's not rocket science. KISS |

Yes, the engine took a hit and it may require a check of the case for cracks. Worst case one of the main bearing supports cracked and the case and crank are toast. Best case is that the pully "spring" to take the impact and the rest was spared.
Also, I would replace all three tranny mounts since they took a shock and probably cracked. |

Well that sucks, but I fear *a lot* of hidden damage, either in the car or by way of insurance companies.
All the best really. |

Hope State Farm is better than the MetLife I had through my employer 2 decades ago. Turned out those #%$$&*$#@%^*$#@!@ gladly accepted my money but slipped up and told me they valued my 1970 VW at ZERO. Crooks !!!

I read this yesterday. Sorry for your misfortune encountering an inattentive driver.
It appears the other driver is at fault. So that is in your favor. Don't let his or your insurance company total your car.
You were legally driving on the roadway and were hit by a driver that was distracted.
If the companies fight you on your desire to have the car properly repaired. Get an attorney involved. In fact, it might not hurt to have an initial consultation with one ASAP.
Hopefully you have saved all of your receipts for all the parts that you have invested on the car. Including the purchase BOS.
Don't accept the first offer of settlement. That is generally a very low number.
Tell the adjuster what you feel the car was worth before it was hit. Make them go back to their manager and get a settlement figure that you can live with.
Or if it works out, the other drivers insurance will cover all the costs for the car to be repaired, including the new engine that you at least will likely need.
Then that's an even better outcome. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Very glad you weren't injured ... !
2yrs ago I bought the wife a mini van for $900. It's a victim of salt on the road but looks good & runs great. It is a 2002.
This past January she was bumped from behind. It was very minor as the rear hatch thingy still closed & the latch worked. We have USAA & the offender @ fault had GEICO. The body shop took into account every scratch, tiny parking lot ding, & blemish in order to total it. Now this was certainly a used vehicle but had a clean Carfax, shiny paint (on the sides as it has the slightest bubbling of clear coat in a few spots on the roof), & this thing has been dead-dog reliable.
They offered $2900 to total it ... or $3350 if we kept the title. We had 24hrs to decide. After looking at it & seeing the 18 or so grease pencil circles all over it - including a tiny paint chip on corner of hood & minor scratches - we complained that the entire van had been scrutinized instead of only focusing on the damaged area. They claimed that was procedure & had no flexibility. We got another offer of $4900 or $5350. So we assumed its true value to be about $600. We suppose they use Kelley Blue Book values or something & they just upgraded the condition figure.
We used $90 of that settlement to get a rear hatch from the pick-n-pull. It was rather comical driving home with that hatch strapped onto the roof of my Crown Vic with padding & using my soft racks for surfboards. LOL
It took about 2hrs to swap them out & I got to dust off my plastic tackle box that has been converted for electrical automobile wiring cuz there's a bundle of about 15 wires.
Any-who that's just our recent encounter with a minor fender bender so don't settle for the 1st offer.
Your bug appears to be in fairly decent shape from those pics & they're going for nice sums these days. Hoping you have a favorable outcome to this inconvenient situation.
Gentle blessings ... stay safe
jinx

Hi TS,
It's back! After a few long excruciating months, its finally back! They almost totaled it, but after a few miracles and my mechanic vouching for me, they didnt. State farm valued my bug at $11k, but since the engine couldnt be removed to be assessed before the bodywork had been done, no one knew the extent of the damage. State farm wrote a check for just the bodywork and my mechanic did it. After removing the engine, there was obviously a lot of damage and State Farm had to write another check. We had also vouched that the windshield had broken in the crash (from a rogue bluetooth speaker) but State Farm could not see how that had happened, so we had to make a video displaying the path the speaker took and eventually got State Farm to write yet another check. By the end, State Farm had written checks totalling to about 8k (well past the totalling mark) and they decided they were going to total it. My mechanic had already done the majority of the work by this point and argued that it would be pointless to total the car now. State Farm agreed and he proceeded with the last bit of work. Sometime after the bodywork, he had offered a new paintjob for $1000 (the insurance paid the rest of it). Although the paint it isnt perfect, its much better than it was previously and for $1000, im not complaining. I got unbelievably lucky with the turn of events and it was just in time for my birthday (its on thursday if anyone and any unwanted vws ). If you are in brazoria county tx and you need a good, honest vw specialist, JJ auto repair on 288B did a great job and navigated all the insurance business very skillfully.
Sorry for the long post but I thought I would fully update you guys

Sorry to see that...
I'd think about designing and rebuilding it with a 'removable' rear end. It makes removing the engine a lot easier and safer.
You could pull the engine with the wheels on the ground. |
